PSU's Kahle and UM's Morales Named Co-Players of the Week
The Big Sky Conference announces a Co-Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award for games played between Dec. 26 - Jan 2. Montana’s Mandy Morales earned the honor for the fifth-consecutive week, and shares the award with Portland State’s Kelsey Kahle.
Morales led Montana to the title at the 27th annual Lady Griz Holiday Classic, with an 83-46 victory over Canisius and a 79-72 win over Wyoming in the championship game.
The sophomore guard earned most valuable player honors at the tournament, averaging 24.5 points, 6.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds in UM’s two victories, going 7-for-13 (.538) from 3-point range and 12-for-12 (1.000) from the line and totaling 13 assists against just two turnovers.
Morales, a native of Billings, Mont., had 30 points in the title game, scoring 16 of them in the second half to rally Montana from a 36-31 halftime deficit. She is the first player in the Big Sky to ever be named Player of the Week five-straight times.
Portland State went 1-1 last week with a 52-65 loss to Nevada and a 85-84 OT win over Utah Valley State. Kahle averaged 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and shot 82.1 percent from the line in the two games.
Sophomore guard Kahle scored 32 points, 19 of them in the second half, and went 17-21 (.810 percent) from the free-throw line against Utah Valley State. She set PSU single-game records for both free throws made and attempted. Kahle also posted a career-high four blocks and a season-high 10 boards.
The Aurora, Ore. native, has two 30-point games on the season and five 20-point performance.
