The eGriz basketball forum is clearly the best, most thorough and open forum in the Big Sky. But even here, we can lose sight of the historic significance of Montana high school sports... and the deep cultural connections to every corner of the state. Time to put aside -- for a moment -- our ongoing debates regarding which Montana hooper, female or male, is good enough to play for the Griz. Montana basketball goes way deeper than that.
For about 10 years in the 1970-80s (when I was teaching at Florence H.S.) we attended the Montana Class C State tourney as fans, which was held at Carroll College. I am still left with the profound connections of those tourneys and the Montana kids, their classmates, families and communities involved. Montana basketball is much, much more than simply a winter sport. We cannot neglect or forget. It's my wish, as a Montana native, that UM and MSU continue to welcome students from all those schools as students and citizens. It's more than just a game.
