Montana, Weber State tied for Presidents Cup lead
OGDEN, Utah - With winter sports now figured in, Montana and Weber State are tied for first in the race for the 2006-07 Sterling Savings Bank Presidents Cup.
The Sterling Savings Presidents Cup is an annual award that recognizes a combination of academic and athletic achievement.
Spring sports and academic information from the second half of the school year will be calculated in June to determine the final winner.
Montana continues to lead the overall athletic portion averaging a league-best 13.1 points per sport. The Grizzlies had a strong winter led by a regular-season championship from the women’s basketball team and a third-place finish from the men’s basketball team.
Weber State is second in the athletic portion with an average of 12.5 points per sport.
Points are determined based on team finish in the regular season standings for soccer, volleyball, basketball and football, and in men’s and women’s cross country, and indoor track and field based on finishes at Big Sky championships.
This is the fifth year for the Sterling Savings Presidents Cup. Weber State won the first two while Montana State edged Northern Arizona in a tiebreaker to claim the 2004-05 Cup. Northern Arizona beat Weber State in a 2005-06 tiebreaker.
The Big Sky also awards men’s and women’s all-sports trophies based solely on team points awarded in conference-sponsored sports.
Northern Arizona leads a tight race on the men’s side with an average of 13.88 points per sport. Montana is second at 13.5 followed by Weber State at 13.1.
The Montana women are first at 12.8 points per sport followed by Weber State at 12.0.
Men’s and women’s all-sports trophy points are two of the five criteria used to determine the winner of the Presidents Cup. Other criteria are individual team grade point averages, graduation rates and number of all-conference performers with a grade point average above 3.0.
