Montana Players

If Larry has to go out of state by all means go out of state. While you hope an in state athlete is good enough to make it, the University of Montana does not owe it to an in-state kid that he gets an offer. For example Alford at Iowa has been recruiting more out of state. You do what you have to do to stay coaching.

As far as McGillis, everyone misses out on a player. Two of the Rush brothers didn't make it to Kansas. Look at all the Iowa kids that have gone down to KU and not played for the Hawkeyes.

I do think that coach K has to put together the best team he can regardless if it is in-state or out of state kids. This year was a down year for in-state players but next year has two exceptional players in Howard and Selvig both are receiving a lot of out of state attention. Living in Helena I have seen Howard play a lot more than Selvig and I have talked to people who have watched Selvig and everyone is very impressed with both players.

This spring both have taken their game out of state Howard is playing for Rotary one of the premiere Seattle based AAU teams and Selvig is playing for the Portland Panthers a premiere Oregon based team. Apparently both have done well enough to get attention from some higher level programs. I know Howard is playing this coming weekend in a tournament in Tuscon where the top 32 AAU teams in the nation are playing, and I am assuming that both will play this summer in the big Vegas tourney.

My point is that these are two very exceptional players that the Griz should have a good shot at and I think for the class of 2007 we should be pursuing them first before going out of state. I know with Huse at MSU and Howard's family connections to the Cats that he may be tougher to land but I think both would be excellent player to take the Griz to the next level.

Griz hoops is on its way up; attempting to compete against D1
programs. I am sure that he would be interested in Montana Kids
if they are good enough. Year in and Year out I would be suprised
if there was more than 1 kid who might fit this mold. If you doubt
this take a few days off and go to the Adidas Big Time in Vegas
in August.

Agreed, the Griz are under no obligation to give a Montana kid a shot at walking on........the point is, that when one of these kids gets a shot and makes the grade, it's a great story for the program. Sure, you can wait to see what happens next year but "walking on" is a low risk proposition for the program. Giving Fehr from Corvallis a shot would be awesome........Go Griz!

Does anyone have stats for Fehr - position he would play, size, and individual stats as well as team results?

Just curious.

Derek Selvig.
Very skilled forward with excellent vision and passing ability. Nice stroke to 18-20 feet. Excellent feel for the game. Likely high major prospect.

Nothing on Scouts about Howard yet.

Our basketball program is in transition to a national caliber program that will be competitive against teams of major conferences. Coach K, who is a first rate coach is able to recruit excellent players from many other states because of his basketball knowledge and keen coaching ability. Along the way, there will be some Montana high school players that come up to the desired standard, but not many. By the way, someone said that coach K of Duke doesn't recruit North Carolina players which isn't true. The ACC schools such as Duke, Wake Forest who have high academic standards do recruit heavily in the state of North Carolina.

so, robin selvig helps wayne tinkle recruit his nephew for the griz, while wayne tinkle helps robin selvig recruit his daughter for the lady griz. we might might be talkin' "win-win" times thirty for four straight years for both both programs.

You can go back to Michael Warhank who had offers in the FRONTIER CONFERENCE but always wanted to be a GRIZ but Taylor told him fifty fifty that he would ever play. WRONG HE PLAYED ON MANY ALL STAR TEAMS during high school even played throughout CHINA Quite a success story maybe this FEHR kid can duplicate this.

The stats on Fehr are excellent, he led the Southwestern A in scoring as a junior at 20 ppg. As a senior he also scored right at 20 ppg. He was 1st team All-State as a Junior and a Senior & was named to the GF Tribune Super State Team this year. Also named MVP in the Bitteroot Valley this year. He is a true 6'4" and would play at the #2 guard spot. VERY athletic....2 time 1st Team All-State in tennis as well. The word on him is that he is an extremely hard worker and is coachable.......I've seen the kid play & he looks to be the "real deal". I think he is a great walk-on candidate....why not give him a shot? GO GRIZ!

D-MS,

Thanks for the info. on Fehr. Is his name pronounced Fair, Fur or Fear? He sounds like a quality Montana athlete that would do the Griz and the state proud. Hope to see him get a shot at walking on.

Collin Fehr is a nice player. But I don't believe he is a D1 candidate. I have seen him play multiple times and he really struggles against strong defenders. I watched Frenchtown shut him down at divisionals with Brian Lebsock and Stephen Phaler matching up against him. I would never say that he could not play at the UofM, but i think he would be a great Frontier conference player and could contribute right away.

Granting a player like Collin Fehr (pronounced Fair) a walk on opportunity gives him a shot at developing into a D-1 player..... if he isn't ready today, who knows where he will be in a year from now.....lots of great examples like Warhank and Criswell in the past, Fehr has the size and is extremely athletic. As I mentioned earlier, why not give him a shot....what a great story we could be reading a few years from now. I agree, he is most definitely good enough to play Frontier Conferance ball, which is probably why Nate Larsen at Montana Tech has been pursuing him. Go Griz!
