Interesting to see the tweets about UM and Wyoming talking about a game as well. I've always thought it was interesting that we haven't had games with them being that they are really close to Missoula (relatively) for a FBS school.

Wyoming playing Montana, especially in the past when the Cowboys were not that great, was not worth it for UW. Losing at home to an FCS school is never a good thing for a FBS school, especially when you are paying that school 500K-750K (or more). Plus, the Cowboys hardly recruit Montana kids and vice versa, so unless Wyoming knows it will more than likely beat the Griz, just not worth scheduling UM.

With the improvements that program has made under Christensen, obviously they feel that the possibility of losing to the Griz is not as great as it once was. (Heck, they nearly lost to Weber State a few years ago.)

I don't think the Griz haven't played Wyoming because Wyoming is scared of the game. Montana last played Wyoming in 1997 and lost 28-13 in what was a UGLY game offensively, for both teams. Since around 2000, Montana has upped its demand on what it's worth for FBS play-up games and I highly doubt Wyoming is willing to pay between $400 and $500K to play the Griz. I would be willing to bet if the Griz were only asking 100 or 200K we would have seen at least one Montana/Wyoming game in Laramie in the last decade, if not perhaps twice. But I don't think Wyoming is scared to lose to Montana. When have the Griz beat the Cowboys? At least since Jack Swarthout was the head coach in Missoula.

Montana has never beaten Wyoming. The '97 game is the only one since '63. 0-13; 60 points to 362. It's nuts to think Wyoming has any fear of playing Montana. But they pay $200 M for an FCS visitor and we demand a minimum of $500 M. Simple math; I'll be surprised if it ever happens.

Didn't mean to imply that UW was "scared" to play the Griz, but the possibility of losing certainly plays a factor when FBS teams schedule FCS teams. Several UM teams could certainly have gone into Laramie and either beaten UW or made it very close over the past 10 years or so. Spent 6 years working in the MWC, and know that for a fact. There have been some bad Cowboy teams over that span.

And if UW were to only pay the Griz 100-200K for the game, then it certainly is not worth it for UM.

Wyoming used to play Montana in Billings and in those days, we didn't have the talented teams of recent years.Wyoming is a natural opponent for Montana and a game every couple of years would generate considerable fan interest in both states.

Spanky and I saw a lot of those games and would love some redemption, because they embarrassed us. A considerable chunk of Wyoming considers Billings its business center. But it will never happen with the current conference affiliations. Unless Montana is willing to take $250 M for a road game, just to play Wyoming. Weber got $200 M; I figure they would go $250 M for UM. Don't think that will pass muster at Main Hall when they can bring in a DII and net $500 M for a home game.

I got a message from a friend today. His thinking is the GRIZ will be adding more regional BCS games from 2015 on. Could this be to figure out how close we are to competing at another level? Honestly to God, who thinks there is a high probability of the GRIZ having to make another decision before 2020? It might not hurt to gauge how we stack up.
