Montana faces uncertainty with South Dakota's new-look defense

Am I doing something wrong? Hour 2 is only 27 minutes long and it never plays the Travis Johnson interview.

This may be unfair to everyone concerned, but when I hear "positionless defense" I think of Bob Stitt.

And, when I read of "in game adustments" from this staff, I try to forget Villanova, MSU, and the rest and just hope experience pays off.

Boy, I am right there with you on that Villanova title game. My son and I went and I was flabbergasted that our defensive coaches were unable to make some, hell, any, adjustment to stop or barely slow down the zone read. And I know Scezar (spelling ?) was extremely talented but our defense that year was not chopped liver. Can more technically football knowledgeable members give any insight into our defensive collapse in the second half of that game?

I was there. Villanova took Mariani out of the game offensively with some dreaded halftime adjustments, offense couldn’t move the ball in the 2nd half, D spent a ton of time on the field in the 2nd half. MC ran them the f*** over in the 4th quarter.

Yes they adjusted to cut down on Mariani's receptions. That also brought up another issue with our coaching in that game. Although Marc was our stud, our offense was not a one trick pony that year. In my mind, there was a glaring failure by the offensive coaches to make any adjustments to compensate for the heavier coverage on Marc. It seemed to me that our loss in that game could fairly be placed on a lack of in game adjustments on both sides of the ball. Did not engender much confidence in the coaching staff in the most important game of the year. Of course, Bobby hit the road after that one-always wondered if his mind was more on his moving on than on that game. Sincerely hope both Bobby and his current staff are more adept at in game planning than they were in that title game.

I am not convinced this "gimmicky" defense will work out. Hauck has the coaching staff to defeat it. And, of course, we all remember when Montana had a coach come in who was the world-beater when it came to nifty offenses and a "genius" at offensive sets. Yes, he won some games. Yes, he is now gone.

But it worked really, really well in the NAIA. We are doomed......

I think you guys are missing something here, lots of teams are crosstraining players to play multiple positions, they also have come up with lots of "new" hybrid positions, what the USD guy is doing is already in practice in a majority of defensed across the country. He may have a different spin on it or use different language but I think even you guys are using some of the same elements of the "positionless" scheme.

The idea is to get the most advantages matchups and if that means dropping a safety down to play LB, or having a corner play safety then you train the players to play all those positions. A players "position" and responsibilities may change from one game to the next depending on the matchups and offensive scheme. Coaches are finding out that players can handle a whole lot more that they thought a few years back.
