Missoula HS Football

What's the deal? Why are the teams so bad? I've heard a lot about a 'lack of interest' is this something that could be fixed? I can't wait to get my masters and have the chance to move up there. I took this year off from coaching to take a break, see if I loved it, and work full-time/school/scout, and I miss coaching bad. What O and D do most teams up there run?

Part of the problem is enrollment, another problem is the lack of a quality junior high program that lets kids matriculate into the high school already knowing the systems.

So do you play Jr High/MS ball or Pop warner? City league?

City League is great, there's no weight limit, it's an age limit, but kids over X weight can't carry the ball, so it's more like HS football and you won't have some 250lbs kid running at your 95lbs kid either.

I believe strongly in having the Pop Warner or Jr HS team running the same stuff more or less.

Missoula has a football program called "Little Grizzly" for players below high school. The problem with this program is two fold: teams run a simple offense, and players are drafted onto teams, rather than being assigned by their area of the city. When I grew up in Billings, this was a big factor, as by the time we reached varsity, we had mostly been playing with the same kids since elementary school or junior high.

That is exactly it....in quite a few sports in Missoula. It's not regulated very well at all. Seems like the administrators or the coaches/parents are running...I mean ruining the show. They want their kids to be the best and get on the best teams but somehow forget that in Highschool you get what you get. Meanwhile the majority of players are past over for "better athletes" so you have a better chance of winning at the 8-14 year old levels. So the few get the most play time and coaching. This is how the "there's no I in Team" is being gotten around IMO.

Though I've heard other opinions such as "there are too many schools in Missoula which dilutes the students you get to pick from. I don't know if I buy into that all together....combination of both maybe.

What are the HS sizes, 9-12 in Missoula? My freshman year I was at a school w around 3K, my soph-senior year at a school with 900-1100. We had about 50 guys on varsity at the 1st school and 35 at the 2nd. At the school I coached at the last four years, we had 60-80 on the freshman team, 30 on the JV, and 40 or so on the varsity. I'd assume I'm closer to the 30-40 on varsity level in Missoula.

Here are the 2006-2007 fall enrollment numbers for all 12 "AA" schools. Notice the Missoula schools are the three smallest "AA" schools in the state. These figures are provided by the MHSA website.

Flathead - 2537
West - 2078
Bozeman - 1936
Great Falls - 1921
Senior - 1900
CMR - 1725
Skyview - 1635
Helena - 1630
Butte - 1533
Capital - 1431
Big Sky - 1292
Hellgate - 1283
Sentinel - 1184

And since 1994 every one of those teams has played in a state championship game except Butte and Sentinel though Butte won in 1991.

Funny to see that. Capital is a perennial power is AA football and the smallest school outside the Missoula area...

Guessing tradition and program dynamics are more important that the pool of kids to draw from...

No skate park?

The problem with Missoula football is this: Little Grizzly. There was an article in the paper not too long ago about the struggles that Missoula football teams have.. and part of the interview was with the guy that ran Little Grizzly. He's been wanting to turn it over to the middle schools for a while and build the competition, but no dice. Middle schools want nothing to do with organized sports because of funds and the whole "we can't afford to buy everyone a trophy" idealism. Little Grizzly would be great if it was regional and they could run better offenses. I bet even with the smaller enrollment that Kalispell/Glacier high have, I bet they'll still steamroll Missoula schools because of the support system in place. It pains me that the middle schools have adopted this "make it as fair as possible" idealism.. it's killed competition in this town. Now middle schools offer flag football, a pathetic wrestling program, and basketball against no one but other Missoula middle schools.

Sounds like Missoula yout football needs City League. It's just the most realistic form of football for MS aged kids. They also need someone who regulates who joins what team etc, tie-ins to the HS teams like Pop Warner has down here. Just makes it more fair/realistic. Save the illegal recruiting for HS.

A great way to improve the O's and D's is to have the head coaches attend mandatory coaching clinics, especially if it's tied into UM, w/ the Montana coaching staff. I've learned a lot from clinics and position tapes. You'll always pick up new drills or ideas to change your old drills.

Are there a lot of private schools up there?

Missoula-Loyola is a Catholic school. Played for the state title last year in class... B? Pretty solid school in most athletics, actually.

Yeah recruiting is always the key-term with private schools. Many do, and many just take whoever hears the good word of mouth. In Fla the FHSAA is a joke, letting public schools like Edgewater (Orlando) and Lake Brantley recruit like crazy, but busting little tiny schools for having kids come there that are 5'6 and 140lsb from some public school that's bitter they lost a couple JV kids. Down here recruiting is a part of the game... offense, defense, special teams, recruiting.
