Missoula area youth baseball

Baseball season is winding up for Babe Ruth and Little Leagues. In case anyone is interested there are a few teams worth getting out there to support in Districts and States.

The Missoula Pioneers Babe Ruth team is loaded and just getting into post season tourney action. They are hosting a tourney out at Kelly Pines. They are likely to be State Champs, so get out there and cheer them on. The majority of the team are Mount Jumbo East kids that did not have time to dedicate to the Mavs, but could easily be huge contributors to the Mavs.

Speaking of Mount Jumbo East, the SR Little League team has been dominating all year. The all Star team combined with WestSide (I think) and most definitely will take Districts. They should be playing for the State Title and advancing to regionals. I am not sure about locations, times, etc, but check out the Missoulian over the next few weeks for details.

Both these teams are well worth the time to support, and if you like baseball played right, check these teams out. GO Missoula!!!!

Congrats to the State Champs!!!!! Great bunch of kids. I will be rooting for the SR MJE AllStars to win it all too at the the little league level. Quite a few of the Pioneers play SR little league too. It is too bad the Mavs are so political and time consuming. There are alot of good players not on the Mavs due to the time and politics associated with the Mavs. These kids would have been and still can be a great help to the Mavs in the next few years.

BTW, Steven Deyoung is one of the toughest and best catchers I have ever seen in Missoula.

Congrats Boys. :thumb:

Pioneers repeat: Missoula squad topples Helena for second straight state title
By FRITZ NEIGHBOR of the Missoulian

Missoula Pioneers catcher Steven DeYoung smothers the plate as he tags out Louie Lopez of the Helena All-Stars on Friday in the fifth inning of the championship game of the Senior Babe Ruth state tournament at Kelly Pine Field in Bonner. Missoula beat Helena 10-5 to win the tournament for the second straight year.

BONNER - Practice time is at a premium and priorities can occasionally get shuffled, and maybe that's why the Missoula Pioneers are having such a good time.

The Pioneers downed the Helena All-Stars 10-5 Friday to claim their second straight Senior Babe Ruth state championship at Kelly Pine Field. They came in short-handed, with Heath Eustance and Justin Montelius at the East-West Shrine football game, and left with a 29-12 record.

Just another day at the yard.

“I think with us there's a lot more freedom, since we don't practice every day,” said Dustin McCrudden, who went the distance for the Pioneers, scattering six hits, six walks and a hit batter. “We do pretty well. They (American Legion teams like the local Mavericks) play 80 games, we'll play around 30. It's a struggle, but it's still fun.”

The fun started early for Missoula, with Jake Ginn pulling an RBI single to right, and coming home on Eddy Apostol's three-run home run to center. That put the Pioneers up 4-1 after one inning.

Apostol added a fourth RBI with a double in the third inning, but the Helena All-Stars kept fighting. They tied the game on a three-run homer from Louie Lopez, who also had four RBIs, in the third. Derek Miller's RBI fielder's choice, following three straight walks issued by McCrudden, knotted the score a 5-5 in the fourth.

“We knew it was a ball game right then,” said Pioneers catcher Steven DeYoung. “We just said, ‘Let's get it going.' We're a very good hitting team and we know it. We started to come back when we needed to.”

DeYoung's RBI single - the third straight hit in the fourth inning off starter Kody Brown - plated Dustin Hover with the go-ahead run.

One out later, McCrudden added another RBI single. Shawn Jensen's fielder's choice brought in another run and McCrudden came home on a passed ball to make it 9-5.

The Pioneers scored again when Kirk Booi doubled to lead off the fifth and came home on Brandt Montelius' one-out double. Booi shored up the bottom of the lineup with two hits and two runs.

That was more than enough for McCrudden, who scuffled at times but also struck out eight.

Helena had its problems on the base paths: Chuck Churchill was forced at third on what should've been a single to left in the fourth; the inning ended with DeYoung picking Miller off first.

“He made me look better than I was,” McCrudden said of the polished DeYoung. “I was overthrowing too much and putting a lot of them in the dirt. He blocked a lot of them.”

Another Helena rally in the sixth stalled when Clayton Church ran on a grounder to third baseman Craig Maunder, who caught Church in a run-down.

The All-Stars, who won two loser-out games Thursday to make the final, managed a walk by Brown in the seventh. But then the hot-hitting Lopez bounced into a game-ending double-play.

“They're a good team. They're a very well-disciplined team at the plate,” said DeYoung of Helena. “Nice easy swings. Fun to watch, and a pain in the butt catch against. Or not to catch against.”

DeYoung has caught plenty of games - all but one of the Pioneers', by his count, and he gets more Saturday with the Mt. Jumbo Little League Senior All-Stars. They host Butte for the District 2 championship, also at Kelly Pine.

“It's really cool to win this one and then try and go get another one,” said DeYoung.

That's the beauty for the Pioneers, who mix baseball with work and other activities. DeYoung is about to pass 60 games this summer, with possibly more on the way. With Friday's win the Pioneers, who are ages 16-18, qualified for the Pacific Northwest Region July 23-27 in Bremerton, Wash.

It's a nice payoff for what some might call weekend warriors.

“It's not as much pressure on the kids,” McCrudden said. “Because all we do is go out there and smile and have fun, like you saw on the field.”

The rift between the Mavs and a few of the Pioneer players goes way beyond "political and time consuming".

But congrats to the Pioneers anyway. They are a good team.

I am very aware of that, but will not mention names out of respect to the players, families, and mavs. The Pioneers have turned out to be an outstanding alternative.

As for MJE SR little league All Stars, they won big in the 1st game of State championship on Wednesday 7/23. One more win and 4 of those kids will have 2 state titles in one summer. :thumb: BTW, all 4 have commited to SR Little League for regionals in CA. The core of the SR LL team took 2nd in state JRs 2 years running a few years back. Since then every player committed to staying with SR LL to get that state title. BTW, they will represent MT very well at regionals very well. Good luck MJE SRs. :thumb:

A few of them Shawn Jensen, Steven DeYoung, Brendan Gragg, and Kirk Booi would be of great help to the MAVS as well. There is also a big kid from WestSide (sorry cannot remember his name) that is Mav material. Trevor Price is also good enough to be a Mav, but seems pretty content, and being a Mav is not a big deal to him.

It is amazing several years ago MJE baseball was a laughingstock in Missoula for a long time, then the likes of Brandon Brown, Taylor Nordby age group motivated a dozen or so younger players, and the results have been amazing the last few years. :thumb:

Congrats to the Sr. Team from MJE. Gordon has a great team there. I was able to see a little of the game last night, before the rain hit. I won't be able to see the games today, but hope they get it done.

And mtgrizrule, you are partially correct on MJE. They were down for quite a while, and then had a good run recently, with the kids you mentioned, the Booi's, Buleys, etc. However, unfortunately, the younger teams (9-12) don't have a lot of talent (at least that is going out for all-stars. There are 2-3 good players on each team, but not much help beyond that). I hope they turn that around too. I would love to see all of the leagues in Missoula very strong.

It is official these boys won 2 state titles in one summer. I just got a phone call, I am not 100% sure on the score but believe they won 9 to 2. From what I have been told they went undefeated in regular season, playoffs, and state, literally no competition for them in LL and some in Babe Ruth. I am guessing 9 of the 12 could play for one of the Mavs teams if they wanted to. By the way the youngest Booi kid is quite a player too. MJE let the coaches advance with this group and it paid off. Sounds to me like they need to do it again.

They are leaving for CA on Sunday, 1st game Tuesday against Oregon. :thumb:

Butte also beat Billings yesterday to win the Juniors state title. The Duffy kid, Bugni kid and Brock Bond are really good athletes for Butte. Not sure what happened with the 9 & 10 group. I know Billings won the first game against Butte.

All Egrizzers pass this on soon. FWIW, these kids are fund raising through Saturday. They are renting a bus for regionals, they have raised over 11k for funds already, but every bit helps. I believe KGVO, the missoulian, and one of the tv stations can be contacted if you are interested in donating anything. If I find a link, email, or more pertinent information, I will post it here.

Good luck CHAMPS!!!!! GO MJE and show everyone we can play baseball in MT. :thumb:

Here is an Allstar update for MJE/West SR's from regionals. They are 1 and 1. They lost a heartbreaker to N CAL 10-6 with very biased umpiring, even 2 calls overturned in favor of N.CAL. Despite that, they manage to load the bases in the bottom of the 7th with no outs with 2,3,4,5 due up, all of which have been crushing the ball this year. They could not ask for more than getting to your heart of the lineup. Somehow N CAL managed to retire the heart w/out surrendering any runs.

They beat Washington 9-6 I think Today (thursday). If they win tomorrow they could rematch N CAL on Saturday. They have to win 3 straight to make the championship. They have the bats to do it but not sure of pitching depth. They have plenty of pitchers but only a few that are dominating. Anyway the games are being broadcast on KGVO, for schedule go to littleleague.org, tournaments, Senior league, West and view the bracket for times. I am pulling for these kids to bring home the regional title. :thumb:
