Community events engage students and residents, giving Missoula a small-town feel. Lush forests and fresh waterways surround the city, but Missoula's cultural attractions and entertainment options are surprisingly urban for a place founded by miners, timber companies and farmers. Live theater and music venues, museums, eclectic shops, restaurants, and bars create a lively scene. Breweries in Missoula attract beer lovers across the Northwest. Missoula hosts several festivals that help residents and students connect with the culture, such as Garden City Brewfest, River City Roots Fest and a series of free concerts overlooking the Clark Fork River, where kayakers test their skills. Nearby mountains, rivers and lakes also offer outdoor activities.

Many events and programs on the UM campus are open to the public. These include athletic games, music recitals, concerts, art gallery receptions, public lectures and film screenings. The Grizzly Pool, an indoor, Olympic-sized pool on campus, and the UM Golf Course are open to Missoula residents for a fee. The university holds a series of youth summer camps on campus.

Students at UM participate in many forms of community outreach, ranging from wildlife restoration projects and toy drives to health screenings and reporting for state newspapers and radio stations. During the past three years nearly 2,000 students donated 366,000 hours of service. The University is also home to the spectrUM Discovery Area, an interactive science museum with exhibits, activities and demonstrations for kids.

Good for Missoula having this title, having a great college town helps recruiting tremendously. I just was in Boulder Colorado and without doubt is a very nice town and deserves number 1.

Missoula is ok, but then, so are, San Luis Obispo, Chico,Arcata, Athens, Stillwater, Lawrence, Eugene, Norman, Columbia, Palo Alto and any one of hundreds in the North East and South....lists like this are simply stupid.

Funny, I could tell just by the title of this thread and Sir Smugness would grace us with his presence.

The only thing California is good for is their quality of herb, thats about it.....

I hear livability.com is really popular with the under 22 crowd.
We're talking about a demographic that's perfected getting three fresh wears out of a single pair of underpants.

Having lived in or near 7 of those towns, I agree your list is simply stupid. I will say one thing for Athens though, no college town that I've ever been in has better looking women, especially if you like blondes.

I think you missed the REAL list....

Top 10 Beer Cities
Missoula #5

http://livability.com/top-10/top-10-beer-cities/missoula/mt

Missoula, MT, may be "out there," but it's worth the trip if you enjoy wide open spaces, big mountains, history and culture, and bold brews.

Bayern Brewing, which opened in 1987, is the only German brewery in the Rocky Mountains. It's a real-deal German brewery, owned by brewmaster Jugen Knoller, who started making beer when he was 16. The brewery has a tasting room where at least six of its beers are always on tap and go nicely with snacks like pretzels, landjaegers (Bavarian beef jerky) and of course, brats.

The Taproom at Big Sky Brewery is a don't miss on the western beer circuit. They produce beers that are both fun to drink and say. Moose Drool, Scape Goat and Trout Slayer are three examples.

The Kettlehouse Brewing Company has a pair of locations in Missoula; both feature working breweries and taprooms. They have six mainstays, three of which are available only in the taprooms and a variety of seasonal beers.

I mean, with all the "backyard" trails, two folfing locations just outside town, floating, variety of restaurants, especially the new ones! Ski resorts within a few hours driving distance and so on..

Nutshell, it's all the little parts that makes Missoula awesome. Especially the vibe and the "Missoula
Hospitality" that is hard to duplicate elsewhere.. DC, NY, Colorado, and Washinton..
