Midrange Shooting

With the problems we all know about related to UM's inside game, now it's even more important that the Griz better utilize the midrange game as part of their offense. I added a pretty long post about this after they lost to Wisconsin last year and from what I've seen so far this year, this continues to be an aspect the Griz continue to ignore.

It appears that most of the offensive sets have the goal of scoring at the rim (either with drives or feeding the post) or by shooting the 3. More and more teams at all levels seem to forget about the midrange game. But just about every team that wins championships knows how to effectively use all three levels of scoring. Unfortunately it's becoming more and more of a lost art.

UM is hitting a great percentage of the 3's they take and I'm not suggesting they stop shooting them. But everyday teams live and die by the 3. With the struggles inside this year, it's even more important for the Griz to devise specific plays to get good midrange shots where the shooting percentage will be even better than from the 3 and will keep defenses off balance. It's much easier for them to prepare for and defend teams that are two dimensional.

As good as UM's shooters have been from the 3, they will be even better from 8 to 12 feet if we use it more. I believe this will be a big factor in whether or not the Griz can repeat as Big Sky Champions.

From what we have seen, Ward gets and hits plenty of mid range shots, within the offense. I have not seen enough practices to know who else is consistent at mid range. I am guessing Jamar, Weisner, Coleman, and Martin. Very few true guards have this in today's game.

I think the easier adjustment within the offense would be posting up Jamar and Coleman more often against 2's and 3's. I also feel more high post sets would help.

I am also very happy to see Wiesner look for his shot more. He looked for the 3 more against SDSU, and that has to continue. The kid is too good of a shooter to not use from 3 more often.
