May 20, 2005 HELENA - Montana guard Michela Schmitz is transferring to Carroll College to play basketball, coach Shawn Nelson announced Friday.

The 5-foot-8 Schmitz was the 2003 Montana Gatorade player of the year, after averaging 22.6 points, five assists and four rebounds a game at Great Falls High. However, she has been hampered with injuries and had her fifth knee surgery before the 2005-06 season at Montana.

“Michela is a tough-minded athlete who will bring a competitive and hard-nosed attitude to our team,” Nelson said. “She is a natural point guard, but has the ability to play all three guard spots.”

She played in 14 games during the 2004-05 season and averaged 2.8 points, 2.5 assists and 1.1 rebounds in 14 minutes of playing time. She played in just seven games during the past season, for a total of 44 minutes, before an injury ended her season.

Schmitz will have two years of eligibility remaining, with the possibility of a third year if a medical hardship is granted.

“Carroll is a great school and an easy decision for me because of the academics,” Schmitz said. “On top of that they have a great women’s basketball team and coaches and I’m excited to be a part of the program.”

Her sister, Megan, will be a senior on the Montana-Western women’s basketball team next season.

It would be so easy for her to just hang it up with all she's been through. It really shows what kind of a person she is. She will always be a part of Griz history and now hopefully it will all work out for her at Carroll. Thanks Michela for the desire and hustle. You deserve the best and Carroll is lucky to have you. Go Griz/Go Saints
