Michael Oguine: One of USA's most valuable players

Here's quite a feather in the cap of Griz Michael Oguine: He's ranked No. 45 in the nation among all college players in the country in terms of the value he adds to his team. The rankings are done by Value Add Basketball, which assesses the ways a player helps his team into on figure that determines his overall value.

Until recently, Trae Young of Oklahoma topped the rankings, when he was replaced by Jock Londale of Saint Mary's.

Obviously, Oguine is the top player in the Big Sky in the rankings, with a value add of 7.71 (meaning his presence adds that much to UM's score each game). Next up from the Big Sky is Jamar Akoh at No. 101. Rorie is at 183.

Others from the Big Sky: Northern Colorado's Spight at 130; EWU's Bliznyuk at 157; Idaho's Blake at 212; Weber's Harding at 388; and MSU's Hall at 491.

(By the way, Value Add makes adjustments to the rankings for level of competition)

So will the conference recognize him as more than a 3rd team all conference player this year? I think he's a player who's stats don't represent his value to the team, so its interesting that this website picked up on his value.

I'd hope MO would be in the conversation for defensive player of the year, and at least 2nd team all conference.

This year's production is spread so evenly across the team, I could almost see a situation where Montana has no players on the 1st team all conference list.

I do think this team (Mike Oguine, especially) is more concerned about a tournament bid than about individual accolades.

If the Griz continue to dominate the Big Sky, we'll see at least one 1st teamer and probably a couple.

As you say, Oguine's individual stats don't necessarily reflect his value to the team, in good part because he's unselfish, and in part because, as you say, production is spread across the team. Griz are fortunate to have a number of talented players who can step up.

Wouldn't surprise me if Oguine failed to make first team Big Sky, as the voters for these teams generally seem most impressed by big scoring numbers and not much else.

I've read that pro scouts and others watch the Value Add list as it helps them find diamonds in the rough. The guys who aren't just shiny objects, but have multiple talents that they use to make their teams better.

That's what I like about this measurement.

By the way, one of the descriptions I read about Value Add noted that the "formula is stacked against low-major players. It adjusts efficiency based on the strength of defenses faced...."

In other words, Oguine had to overcome strong odds to do as well as he did on this ranking.
