Most hockey fights are singular in nature. Two players dropping the gloves. In the NHL they are corraled as soon as someone falls to the ice, or the refs break it up, same with College. The longest one I have ever seen (even on tape) was about a minute, maybe two if there was alot of talking between the players. Penalties range from 5 min in the box for both players...to 5 min and a 10 min game misconduct (an eternity in some games), maybe a walk to the locker room. Penalties handed out right there. Game suspensions can and are often tacked on post-game.
Bench-clearing brawls are actually rare. And when they do happen, the players got game misconducts, ejections, and sometimes personal or team fines. In the hockey minors and colleges, the penalties are the similar except for the fines...multi-game suspensions are the norm for instigators (especially if there is injury) and sometimes coaches are suspended for the same games as well...can't control your team...have a seat on the couch and get it together.
I'd love to see the NCAA bring the thunder and toss the lot for the rest of the season, but it won't happen. Too many wealthy alums, scholarships, and lack of precendent. (Although now would be a good time to set some...) The Miami /UFI players aren't going to get the penalties that we feel merit the crime. Maybe a single game suspension and a slap on the wrist for players. Coach will probably be fired or suspended.
Frustrating but more likely true... :twocents:
