Meaningless Texas Bowl

Hey pards, I's just sitting here with a sweet tea watching Baylor University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign slug it out in the Texas Bowl. The game has been tight thus far with Illinois leading 9 to naught in the second stanza. The game is being played in Reliant Stadium, the same place where the Houston Texans play, and I'll be damned if it ain't almost filled with fans. The real test will come after halftime when we'll see if the teams even come back to play the second half. Hell, I sure as hell wouldn't play in such a meaningless game. I mean, like my pal Grizmayor mentioned, they don't even have another game next week.

*I know this belongs in the Sports Forum but I put it here because a lot of people don't read the other forums.

The Fighting Illini score a touchdown to go up 16 to zero over the Bears. The player looked like he was excited to have scored the touchdown, but someone probably paid him off to act as if it meant something.

Not sure why you keep bringing it up amigo. Many of us live Montana and are too dim-witted to get the point of your witty and urbane posts apparently. But if you have a point to make, please do so. If it is between the bowl sysem vs. the playoff system in Divison II, I feel your pain. But the powers that be made their decision FOR THE TIME BEING. Hopefully it will be revisited at some point in the not too distant future. I would suggest if you have any ties to the program that you commence lobbying those that make the decisions. You will be able put your inestimable skills to better use and help the Griz move towards a goal that you apparently desire. Personally, I like college football in all it's forms. Enjoy the tea and a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year to you, amigo.

Thanks, pard. The reason I keep on bringing the subject up is because the bowl system is a joke and nobody cares about the games because the are meaningless. I do apologize to each and every one of you fellas if I hadn't made that very clear. As for y'all's decision to stay down in I-AA, that's just fine with me because I wouldn't want my Demon Deacons to ever have to play y'all.

Thanks for the well wishes, pard. I wish the same to you and yours. One thing: once my wife, Donna, leaves for work (she's a nighttime physician), the sweet tea magically turns into rye.

Hell, pards, I just saw some footage of the University of Maryland's coach Ralph Friedgen talking to his players in the locker room after a 51-20 drubbing of East Carolina University in the Military Bowl. This fella had tears in his eyes and was talking about how he hopes the team moves into the top 25 after the impressive victory. What a dunce. Nobody cares that they won, and the victory means naught. It was truly pathetic.

Thank you for your clarification, Ashley. I understand that the bowl system is basically about money, which was confirmed during the Military Bowl earlier in a discussion about why Maryland received such a low bowl seed. I enjoy the bowl season, although by the time the final game rolls around, the earlier ones do seem a little hazy. I do implore you to understand that WE had nothing to do with the decision to either move up or stay in the FCS division. That would be imparting way too much power to the posters on this board.

Personally I think the players in a bowl game get as excited as those in a playoff system. Which one is superior is probably personal preference. I do find it somewhat hurtful when folks say that teams in the FBS are the only ones that count. That seems to denigrate all those who leave their blood, sweat and tears on the field in Division II, Division lll, NAIA Division l, ll, well, you get my point. Reaching the pinnacle of their respective divisions may very well mean just as much to them as it does to the players from Auburn or Oregon. Granted they likely don't have the same physical tools, just as the Big Sky Conference is nowhere near competetive with the SEC, but some of them graduate and become husbands fathers, taxpayers, and even captains of industry like yourself. Heck, amigo, if we walk down that road far enough I guess there are those that would say that people shouldn't care about college athletics at all since they certainly aren't on par with the professionals. Now I can't speak for you, but it seems that my son cares a lot about his Little Guy football team. At least he was crying when they lost in the playoffs. I wouldn't have the heart to tell him it is an inferior brand of ball.

Does your wife work in an ER or some other area of endevor? At any rate, it is a good excuse to switch to Rye. I have a little of my 92 year old uncle's eggnog recipe calling me, I think. It requires copious quanities of of Jack Daniels to make it effective. Best Wishes.

You raise tremendous points, pard. Extreme application of any maxim will likely obtain perverse results. I guess these players I'm watching do seem to care a bit, and I guess it could be that it's not all an act and the bowl games actually do mean a thing or two. I reserve judgment until later.

It's not ER, it's nighthawk radiology. Enjoy the 'nog, pard.

Then sit back, sip away, and enjoy watching the kids in their current most important time or their lives. Cheers.

Well, pards, I switched to rye about an hour ago and started watching the Alamo Bowl. I seem to remember the Alamo bowl producing some classic tilts in the past, but it might just be because the other bowls go by different names these days.

Anyway, Oklahoma State is looking pretty tough against the Wildcats of Arizona. I can't wait to watch the Holiday Bowl pitting The Washington Huskies against the Nebrasky Cornhuskers for the second time this season. I secretly hope my Panthers will draft that Jacob Locker fella even though most of my pals want us to get Andrew Luck.
