Matsuzaka

Barry Zito will fit nicely in the rotation. Yanks also have some good young arms that may crack the rotation, or bolster the BP.

This definitely interests me in regards to Barry Zito, it at least would be a situation where his availability would be considered in place of 'letting' the Red Sox go for Matzusaka. They're even saying a possible 3 yr. 36 million deal on top of the 42 million no less.

Last year Philip Hughes was regarded as the best pitcher in the minors @ the age of 20. Another possibility for a rotation spot could be Garrett Patterson, a 6' 2" 220 lbs. LHP who is 25 come this May 11. Mel Stottlemyre was only 22 back on 12 August 1964 in his major league debut & went on to win 164 games with a 2.97 ERA.

Did you see how bad this kid was lit up the other day when the Major leaguers got a second look at his pitches? I think Boston just peed away a ton of money on a kid that has question marks, not that NY hasn't been guilty of that, ie, Pavano, although they are going after him for contract violations.

Yes, but hes' got the 'gyroball!!!' (Spoken like a true Red Sox fan).

P. S. - Whatever the hell that is.

CORRECTION: for 51.1 million the Boston Red Sox have now 30 days to negotiate a deal with 26 year old Daisuke Matsuzaka.

I could almost buy an entire pitching staff with that amount of money; some places an entire team.

Make no mistake - if Matsuzaka stays healthy, he will be a beast in MLB.

No idea what Grizbacker is talking about - Matsuzaka is not pitching against the visiting team of MLB stars. His agent wouldn't let him.

If he didn't play then someone used his name and number when they gave up those 2 dingers. he still was very good but no one is unhittable.

Outside of the fact that if the Red Sox actually do sign him, at last report about a three year contract for thirty-six million (costing Boston a total of slightly over 87 million over a three year period = 29 million a year for a starting pitcher) his playing schedule over in the Japanese league was pitching about once every six days or so. In MLB his schedule is going to be somewhat different; can he withstand the pace? Will he break down pitching so many innings with that amount of frequency?

The report of him in 'The Sporting News' is that Boston would be 'very' lucky if he does have the stamina to stand up to so many outings & innings pitched; one will see I guess but that is a very enormous investment to test ones' luck on.

what a shame, not really

i just think posting 51.11 Mill for the guy was a poison pill in the japanese "posting" system...i am far and away anti-Yankee and more of a Red Sox (but a true Mariner at heart), but what Theo and the BoSox have done have ruined this system..the sox just did it to keep him from wearing pinstripes this year.

Bullshit, Red Sox are signing him to a 6 year deal around $8 million a year. He is getting his physical, or already had it.

Red Sox are signing him to a 6 year deal around $8 million a year.

That would average out to being approx. $ 12,487,500 a year for the next six years, considering that the Red Sox would also have to pay the posting of $ 51.1 million as well.

CORRECTION: averages out to $ 16,516,667 a year over the next six years, must have used an eight instead of a six; damn, ever since these calculators have come out I can't do math in my head anymore.

Besides, how can one understand a fan base that worships a tired, soiled and worn out piece of laundry anyways, even the Maytag has such distain for them that they eat 'em up alive, especially when they're red, it makes those washing machines drool & sprout horns. Ole.

ANOTHER CORRECTION:

$ 51.11 for posting and nearing a contract worth a 'minimum' of $ 52 million over a six year period yields an average of $ 17,185,000 a year for services yet to be rendered.

The $51.11 million goes to Seibu and will likely be paid all at once in one lump sum. The $52 million contract to dice-k will be paid out over 6 years. Plus, there are some incentives that can earn him an additional $8 million.

So, it is really about $60 million first year and then $8 to $9 million the following 5 years that Red Sox will have to spend.

Then you add JD Drew and Lugo, and Red Sox will be paying $86 million on three players for one season. That's more than the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals combined, or at least close to it.

Yeah, for real; that's $ 70 mill for J. D. Drew over five years & $ 36 mill for SS Julio Lugo for four years. Plus they also signed SS Alex Cora for two years. That's some kind of a bankroll.

F the Sox, the Yankees will beat their asses anyway. Wait till Rocket jons Pettite and the rest of the staff. Boston sucks
