This definitely interests me in regards to Barry Zito, it at least would be a situation where his availability would be considered in place of 'letting' the Red Sox go for Matzusaka. They're even saying a possible 3 yr. 36 million deal on top of the 42 million no less.
Last year Philip Hughes was regarded as the best pitcher in the minors @ the age of 20. Another possibility for a rotation spot could be Garrett Patterson, a 6' 2" 220 lbs. LHP who is 25 come this May 11. Mel Stottlemyre was only 22 back on 12 August 1964 in his major league debut & went on to win 164 games with a 2.97 ERA.
Did you see how bad this kid was lit up the other day when the Major leaguers got a second look at his pitches? I think Boston just peed away a ton of money on a kid that has question marks, not that NY hasn't been guilty of that, ie, Pavano, although they are going after him for contract violations.
