Definitely on scholly.
The Baylor Bears added transfer quarterback RJ Martinez from Northern Arizona University Thursday morning. Martinez committed to Baylor over offers from Southeastern Louisiana, Delaware, Tarleton State, Weber State, Incarnate Word, and Louisiana Tech.
Martinez took over as starter for the Lumberjacks early in his freshman year, with his first ever appearance coming vs Arizona in Tuscon, where he lead NAU to a 21-19 upset over the Wildcats. It was Northern Arizona's first time beating Arizona since 1932.
Following the game vs Arizona, Martinez never looked back as he would go on to start every game from then on for the Lumberjacks. In 2021, he would throw 136 completions on 220 attempts (61.8% comp.), totaling 1,713 passing yards and 14 touchdowns in a breakout freshman season that would earn him Big Sky Freshman of the Year and fourth team All-Big Sky. On the ground Martinez would carry the ball 53 times for 187 yards and five touchdowns.
In Martinez's sophomore season in 2022 the Lumberjacks would struggle with a 3-8 record on the year, but Martinez continued to shine throughout the season, throwing 291 completions on 441 attempts (66% comp.) for 2,885 yards and 16 touchdowns.
In his sophomore campaign, Martinez would have several signature performances including leading the Lumberjacks to an upset win over FCS power Sam Houston St. in week 2, and in 9 vs Montana State where he put up 452 passing yards and 3 touchdowns in a heartbreaking 41-38 loss.
A central Texas native, Martinez played his high school ball at Westwood High in Austin, Texas.
Throwing for 7,608 yards for 67 touchdowns and rushing for 1,612 yards and 28 touchdowns in his three years at Westwood, Martinez would routinely stuff stat sheets on Friday nights.
The game that made him in a high school football legend in the Austin area came against Cedar Ridge his junior year, where he threw 50 completions for 602 yards and 7 touchdowns, while also rushing for 186 yards and 3 scores. His 50 completions from the game vs the Raiders tied the state record set by Kyler Murray and Johnny Manziel for most completions in a game.
Martinez's performances earned him First Team All-District honors in 2018, 2019, and 2020, along with being named District Offensive MVP in 2020.
With two years left of eligibility, Martinez joins Mississippi State transfer Sawyer Robertson and 2022 starter Blake Shapen as the three quarterbacks for the Bears going into the 2023 season.
Martinez is the 10th transfer to commit to Baylor in the first window of the transfer portal, joining Sawyer Robertson, Mike Smith, Jake Roberts, Isaiah Dunson, Jack Stone, Dominic Richardson, Clark Barrington, Ketron Jackson and Campbell Barrington as future Bears.
