5:30 for the men / 7:00 for the ladies. I think I'm going to catch the men's - I do play casual pick-up basketball with friends on tuesday night, so I'd have to roll around 7:00.
GRIZ TO HOLD ANNUAL MAROON-SILVER
SCRIMMAGE TUESDAY EVENING
MISSOULA, MONTANA (10/25/10-dg) - Fifth-year head coach Wayne Tinkle and his 2010-11 University of Montana Grizzly basketball team will make its debut at UM's annual Maroon-Silver scrimmage Tuesday, Oct.
26, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in UM's Adams Center/Dahlberg Arena.
The Lady Griz will begin their Silver-Maroon scrimmage at approximately 7:00 p.m.
Tinkle said he will divide his players up on each team as evenly as possible and then switch some of the players at halftime.
Montana secured its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history a year ago and was 22-10.
The Griz have some talented players returning this season, but there are eight players new to the Division 1 ranks, and just one senior on the squad.
"I am excited to get our team to play out in front of a crowd,"
said Tinkle, who has a four-year record of 70-53 at his alma mater. "I know our new players will have some jitters, and it will be nice to iron some of those in a game-type setting."
UM's only senior returner is 6-11 center Brian Qvale, who led the team in rebounding (7.1 rpg) and was their second-leading scorer
(10.2 ppg) last season. The team's other returning starter is 6-1 sophomore guard Will Cherry, who was the team's fourth-leading (8.3 ppg) scorer and had a team-high 61 steals.
Another key returning letterman is 7-0 junior forward Derek Selvig, who was second in rebounding (5.1 rpg) and fifth in scoring (6.0 ppg). Two other returning lettermen are 6-1 guard Shawn Stockton (6-1) and 6-7 forward Mathias Ward. Also back is 6-9 forward Eric Hutchison who redshirted last season.
"All of our veterans have been right on par so far and playing some pretty good basketball, but we still need to get some more
leadership from a few of them," Tinkle said. Newcomers include three
players from the junior college ranks: 6-3 guard Chase Adams (Bakersfield College), 6-4 forward Art Steward (Casper College), and 6-3 guard Jordan Wood (Snow College), as well as five players from the high school ranks.
Prep players on the squad include 6-2 guard Vaughn Autry (Serra HS in Los Angeles), 6-8 forward Taylor Farnsworth (Mead HS, Spokane, Wash.), 6-5 guard-forward Kareem Jamar (Westchester HS in LA), 6-9 center-forward Billy Reader (Lake Oswego HS, Oregon), and 6-7 forward Mike Weisner (Walla Walla HS, Wash.).
"Kareem Jamar has been playing very consistently for us on both ends of the floor," Tinkle said. "Jordan Woods is getting more comfortable in our system, and Vaughn Autry and Billy Reader are having their ups and downs, but they have both shown very good potential."
The Grizzlies have a home exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 4 against Lewis and Clark State which begins at 7:05 p.m.

The University of Montana women’s basketball team will make its season and public debut Tuesday when the team splits up for its annual Maroon and Silver scrimmage. The game starts at 7 p.m. at Dahlberg Arena.
The women’s scrimmage will follow the men’s Maroon and Silver scrimmage, which starts at 5:30 p.m.
The scrimmages are free to the public.
“I like this game because we get some fans there and it’s a game situation with some atmosphere,” 33rd-year coach Robin Selvig said. “It’s an experience I find critical, especially for our young kids.”
Unlike the men, who started practicing just over a week ago on Friday, Oct. 15, the Lady Griz started on Sunday, Oct. 3, thanks to a new NCAA rule that bumped up the start date for women’s teams to 40 days before their first game.
The 2010-11 team is heavy at the bottom – 10 of the Lady Griz’ 15 players are underclassmen, including five true freshmen – but four players return who started at least half the team’s games last winter, eight letterwinners in all.
“There is a good work ethic with this group and the ladies are excited, so we’ve made good progress,” Selvig said. “It’s tough to tell too much until you play someone else, but the extended practice time seems to have helped in terms of not feeling like we’re rushed.”
Montana has a trio of seniors, all of whom had at least 15 starts last year, in forwards Sarah Ena and Jessa Loman Linford and guard Stephanie Stender.
Ena and Loman Linford will make up half of Selvig’s four-player rotation at the four and five positions, while Stender, the team’s top returning perimeter threat, will likely start at the two.
Montana’s junior class, for the time being, has been reduced to a single player with the ongoing shoulder problems of forward Misty Atkinson. Fans can expect to see Tianna Ware’s debut at point guard Tuesday.
Montana’s underclassmen are split between five true freshmen and five sophomores, though the sophomore class will be without guard Kenzie De Boer for the next four to six weeks due to a recent hand injury.
De Boer and forward Alyssa Smith both played in all 29 games last year as true freshmen.
“We’ve lost Kenzie for a while, so that’s one of our best players who won’t be playing in our early games,” Selvig said.
“That’s a tough loss because she’s got some experience – she had some pretty big games as a freshman – and she’s our most versatile perimeter player.”
Forward Katie Baker started the season’s first 15 games a year ago and was averaging 11.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game when she was lost for the season to a knee injury in early January.
Except for the lasting scar, Selvig doesn’t think fans seeing his team for the first time Tuesday would be able to pick out the player who is coming back from a knee injury.
“It’s like you wouldn’t even know,” Selvig said. “Katie didn’t miss a beat.”
Forward Alexandra Hurley averaged 11.0 minutes per game last year as a redshirt freshman.
Point guard Ashley Ferda spent her redshirt freshman season mostly on the sideline in a boot while recovering from a shin injury. Even nearly a year later she can only practice on an every-other-day basis.
Half of Selvig’s underclassmen are true freshmen, at least two of whom are expected to contribute immediately.
Point guard Lexie Nelson and forward Jordan Sullivan – who was a rebounding force when the team had a closed-door scrimmage a little over a week ago – will be playing major minutes this season starting with the season opener at UC Riverside on Friday, Nov. 12.
The status of the other three newcomers – guards Torry Hill and Kellie Cole and forward Carly Selvig – is still up in the air.
Freshmen can play in the scrimmage as well as Montana’s two exhibition games and still retain the ability to redshirt.
Hill would most likely play and contribute right away, but she is also recovering from a knee injury. Hill’s season-ending injury came in early February, a month after Baker’s.
“Torry just got going about the time we started practicing (on Oct. 3), and there is already a big difference between right now and where she was. She is starting to gain some of her confidence back after being tentative,” Selvig said.
The future of Cole and Selvig will be determined in the next two and a half weeks, with any unseen injuries and available playing time factored in the decision.
“You don’t want to redshirt yourself out of any wins,” Selvig said about shelving any of his newcomers.
Montana will continue its preseason with a pair of exhibition games in early November. The Lady Griz will host Carroll on Wednesday, Nov. 3, and Great Falls on Sunday, Nov. 7.
The regular season opens with a two-game road trip to California to play UC Riverside and Cal State Bakersfield.
