Maroon & Silver Scrimmage

yeah, those thumbs up are the exact opposite of what i wanted to see. I was not looking to hear how great those guys are. ugh. if we stumble. if we lack the pure 1 or solid 3 i'll always wonder how good we could've been. even if we make the tournament, i'll wonder if those two could've carried us a bit further. Even so, i am beyond excited for this coming season. the talent coming in is unbelievable.

look on the brightside "athome". This opens up more minutes for our bigs with the likes of Sharp, Selvig, and Hasquet seeing time at the 3. Question is if any of those 3 can handle it regarding perimeter Defense. I love Hasquet's attitude and drive to be the best. Nothing this kid does on the court surprises me. I know he worked hard in the offseason on quickness and ballhandling. Will it translate defensively though? At least with any of these 3 playing perimeter D, teams will not be launching 3's at will.

If I were to play any of these 3 at the 3, I would make sure I had Qvale, Vanderjagt, or Selvig (when not playing 3) manning the paint shaded to whatever side of the court they are playing on the perimeter. This to reduce the liklihood of uncontested layins. Offensively I am comfortable with any of the 3 at the 3.

Also when we do play small quick teams this opens up minutes for Staudacher (his perimeter shot will be a weapon this year), Graves (his athleticism and leaping help make up for his height, Spurgettis (if his rumored improvement turns out to be factual).

Minutes at the 3 will be determined by matchups, no other choice but to have 3 true guards or 3 true pf/c types. Then again, I see Selvig as a player that will make everyone better. By year's end he may turn out be the "key" player for post season success.

I also am a big fan of pressure Defense. Our pressure D would be amazing with any combination of Graves, Rundles, Martin, and Elgin Taylor. When we do go small, I pray Wayne goes balls to the wall defensive pressure. No conservative D when we go small. :thumb: All please give updates after the scrimmage.

Go GRIZ!!!!

It is really difficult to evaluate returning studs (Haquet, Strait, Rundles) at scrimmages. Sure you might be able to see if a guy has added a hook shot or a three point shot to their game, but typically these guy's are at the top of the food chain and do not have much competition to play against. Secondary the coaches generally treat these guy's as "know quantities", and tend to run the scrimmages to evaluate the second tier players. In the Griz case you have to imagine the coaches will be looking to determine, who will be Rundles running mate, what direction do the coaches want to go at the 3 position, first subs, and finally redshirts.

Strait, Hasquet and Rundles will have nice games, but the real game to evaluate them in is the exhibition games.

yeah, agreed.

Long and detailed report "athome". Thanks again.

(ARGH) I am officially regretting and missing Montana now. I am barely surviving football season w/out the GRIZ live. Basketball will take a miracle to make it through.
