Morales named honorable mention
By the Missoulian
Mandy Morales is traveling in fast company these days.
The Montana basketball guard has been named an honorable mention selection on the Kodak/WBCA All-America team, the first Lady Griz freshman to ever receive that honor. The only other freshmen to make the team this season were Candace Parker of Tennessee and Courtney Paris of Oklahoma, two of the most highly publicized players in the nation.
The 5-foot-9 Morales, a unanimous All-Big Sky selection, set a UM freshman scoring record by averaging 15.9 points per game. The former Billings West standout also ranked among the Big Sky leaders in rebounds (5.1), assists (4.1) and steals (2.2).
UM assistant coach Shannon Cate Schweyen was a first team All-America for the Lady Griz in 1992, the only player in Big Sky history to earn that accolade. She made honorable mention as a sophomore and junior.
The last Big Sky player to earn honorable mention All-America was Montana's Linda Weyler in 1999. UM's other honorable mention All-Americans since 1990 have been Ann Lake in 1994, Greta Koss in 1996 and 1997, and Skyla Sisco in 1998.
