Mallory, Pillans, Cook

These guys were talked about all Summer and you saw it last night. The coaching staff added some depth and talent to the offensive line and the Griz hung 61 on a defense that held Western Illinios to 10 points a week ago. Sneed has time to throw the ball and receivers have time to run down field routes. Marcus Knight had 3 scores on the ground....been awhile since a running back had 3 rushing touchdowns. UNA was totally gassed in the 4th quarter. Montana had a lot of success last night and the offensive line was a big part of it. Damn glad to see it! Go Griz!

Could only follow on the web (streaming here sucks, but it's all we got). But I definitely had that impression too.

Funny ... when a good FCS team plays up at an FBS, it's usually the depth that tells in the end. The FCS has just one layer (more or less) of top-level players ... and they get worn down. UNA is kinda in that boat. As a relatively recent move up from D-II, they have some very good players ... but not enough depth to hang with a deeper, good FCS team. I still think they are going to make some noise this year, and only get better and better as they add more FCS depth.

Mallory plays hard and to the whistle. As long as his stamina is good he will be a force

Mallory definitely plays with good lad level/leverage. He also definitely has a bit of a nasty streak!! Enjoyable watching him last night!!

I watched one play where Mallory was still pushing his guy 15 yards downfield (and after the whistle, I believe...lol)....dude has a mean streak.

I wouldn't say I was "down" on Mallory, but from reports from camp, I was a little unimpressed going into the season.

I think he earned a starting spot last night (in addition to totally changing my mind), and every time one of our RBs broke loose, he was usually close by, mauling his defender. :thumb:

Mallory can run block; most of our other guys are pass blockers and struggle with run blocking, which requires a different set of skills/attitude.

Bobby said after the game that the coaches told the lineman that (If I remember correctly 8 or 9) would play, and they were going to pick the starters for the next game off of the tape. I saw quite a few non starters in during the game before it got out of hand. Definitely agree on Mallory, and after watching the game again yesterday, he opened some big holes, pass blocking I thought he did really good also.

He's gonna be needed against that 340 lb NT for Oregon. Yowza.
#99 for UNA was that big. 6’5” 340ish. Kid must have had bad grades because he looks the part of an SEC d lineman
UNA #99 was Brodric Martin, listed at 329, RS sophomore, from Tuscaloosa, AL ('Bama town). Claimed a 4.7 forty, Bench 290, squat 530.

Looked him up: Problem might have been grades, but his Freshman weight was listed as just 275. If he was that (or less) out of high school, Power-5 scouts would not be very interested, I suspect.

I saw the end of that play too. Was wondering what he was doing downfield in safety territory when the play was back by the line of scrimmage.

I also saw him block the guy out of the tv screen. I thought a penalty was coming for playing after the whistle. But, then watched again and kind of looked like the UNA player might have been holding him, so he kept pushing. Was kind of funny to watch.

Some pretty gorgeous run blocking on this play. Cook and a pulling Villanueva make a nice hole you can see in the second video. Mallory and Sirmon do a great job moving guys out for Cook to clean up.
