Maine Having Injury Problems

Looks like Maine has got the injury bug worst than we do.

A few players, however, won't be ready for Montana.

Two starters from a year ago, center Ben Lazarski and cornerback Jarrod Gomes, are out for the season with shoulder injuries. Devon Goree, Maine's other starting cornerback, had surgery on both shoulders and, although he is practicing, isn't 100 percent. Clinton Brown, a reserve safety and cornerback in 2002, has also missed significant practice time.

Linebacker Agean Robinson filled in for two games last season when All-America Stephen Cooper was sidelined with an ankle injury. Robinson injured his ankle last spring playing basketball and has yet to practice.

"You can have an All-American coming back but if they aren't practicing, are they getting better?" Cosgrove said. "They want to be better than before but if they don't practice, they can't play. That's why we're pulling the reins back a little bit. We need to get healthy."

Cosgrove is holding some players out of practice for precautionary reasons. Offensive tackles Pete Richardson and Matt Hammond, both selected to the preseason All-Atlantic 10 team, missed practices last week with minor injuries. Defensive ends Dennis Dottin-Carter and Marcus Walton sat out, as did tackle Dan Joslyn. Dottin-Carter was a preseason All-America selection after collecting 9.5 sacks in 2002.
