Mac-neese wins a tight one!

SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) -- Scot Pendarvis threw for 226 yards and one touchdown and ran for another score Thursday night as McNeese State defeated Texas State 38-28.

Pendarvis score on a 1-yard run to cap an 80-yard drive with 41 seconds left in the first quarter for McNeese State (7-1, 2-0 Southland). He hit wide receiver Britt Brodhead on a 73-yard touchdown pass play with 13:19 left in the third.

The Cowboys jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when Jerrell Zeno returned an interception 12 yards for a touchdown seven seconds into the game. Texas State tied it five minutes later when Larry Hayden returned a fumble recovery 52 yards for a touchdown.

Morris Brothers carried 18 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns to lead Texas State (3-7. 0-3). Brothers scored on a 44-yard run in the second quarter and a 3-yard run with 4:26 left in the game.

Pendarvis completed 13 of 22 passes with two interceptions.

McNeese State had 465 yards of total offense to 290 for Texas State.

Cory Elolf set a Texas State school record with an 86-yard punt in the third, breaking the 76-yard record set by Bill Soyers in 1968.
