Loyola Track and Field

Read the article in Readers Speak in the Missoulian about the State Track Meet......Talked to several track coaches and they were not happy about the decisions of the MHSA............Anyone else know anything........Sorry I didn't know what forum to put it on so stuck it here...........

They should be a bit bent out of shape. Deegan broke the rules...although the ring that he did not remove probably had no effect on his performance, he broke the rule. Since the time kids are in YMCA ball or any other activity, they have to remove all jewelry, baller bands, and other assorted decorations. Deegan should have (and probably did) know the rule. It is a shame that his arrogance cast a shadow on Loyola's showing at state and even a bigger shame that the MHSA did not have the guts to back up the rules they helped establish.

I guess as an old High School AD........I believe schools have to follow the rules as dictated in sports.....It is really too bad the MHSA did not stick up for the committee assigned to the meet..........Past directors of the MHSA would have I am sure.......Anymore when someone threatens a law suit everyone else tends to fall in line.................Undoubtably (sp) the boy from Loyola is probably a great kid.....sounds like he is a great athelete but rules are rules and if we break them we have to pay the price......I once had to turn one of my favorites in who made an all star game but was caught drinking and was not allowed to play.....In some ways I think it made a better man out of him..............

And isn't that the real goal of high school athletics?

Congratulations on your moral stand - there seems to be far too little of that these days. Place the blame in this situation squarely on the parents - they are the ones that hired a lawyer and don't seem to see anything wrong with their child's disregard for the rules. IMHO, they are not setting a very good example for the kid - I just hope that he's strong enough to not take this particular lesson to heart.

The real shame is that you would post something like this without knowing what actually happened.

Deegan made his first throw, the ring was noticed, and he was allowed to continue his throws. THAT was the actual problem here, not arrogance or any other of the reasons that you offer up. Deegan broke the rules, but SO DID MHSA. The appeal that was made was a procedural appeal, that Deegan should be allowed to compete because the person running the javelin screwed up by letting Dustin continue his competition throws before disqualifying him. I am sure glad you all have such high morals here, but it wasnt cheap or unfair to reinstate Degan. Just as you cant convict someone on mishandled evidence, the MHSA policy was not followed by the official and so they granted a dispensation to compete in the state competition.

Please. the "Readers Speak" section is NOT articles. It is a place for cranky tirades. The most telling part of the whole letter is the signature, Randy Roberts, Thompson Falls

Let me guess- this guy is the one that got in fights with the umpire at his sons little league game. I hope everyone could be mature enough not to believe everything they see in the newspaper
