Senate Bill 112: The Dylan Steigers' Protection of Youth Athletes Act addresses the importance in concussion regulation for Montanan youth athletes. The purpose of the bill is to prevent permanent injury and death to youth athletes in the state of Montana. The act addresses concussion education, suspected concussion resulting in removal from play, assessment, and clearance from a licensed health care provider in order to return to play.

The bill has passed the Senate; tomorrow at 3pm it will be heard in the House. This bill is sponsored by Senator Anders Blewett of Great Falls.

For those who have not heard of Dylan Steigers - he was a 2006 graduate of Sentinel High School in Missoula. While he was playing in a spring football scrimmage at Eastern Oregon University, he suffered a severe brain injury in the last play of the game. He was life-flighted to Boise where he died the next day, May 9, 2010. Mother's Day. Dylan had a number of concussions that we know about - beginning with Little Grizzly and continuing into high school. Although it is not 100% certain that those prior injuries contributed to his final one - most evidence suggests that if a concussed brain is not given the time to recover from the injury, the cummulative result can be permanent damage.

This is probably not the forum to post in, but I'd like people to be able to find it even if it's moved. Thank you Mods.
