LG vs. NDSU

LG up 25-17 with 3:30 before halftime. On ESPN+. Anybody else see the foul on Marxen's three attempt? A good foot behind the men's line and refs only give her 2 FTs. New play-by-play guy even said they checked replay... :? Guess it's first day for refs too. It's at 47.8 of first quarter if anyone wants to see just how obvious it was a three.

LG miss a three at the buzzer and lose 63-65. One could tell it was the first game as there were lots of inconsistency but had to like the fight from the LG later in the game to still have a chance. I wish Marxen would've shot more throughout the game as she looked pretty good even creating her own stuff from the perimeter. Her player fell down on the last shot which might've surprised her.

Just got back from the game, which I think was a great first-game match against a quality opponent. I'd much rather see a game like this as opposed to one against a lower division school.

The biggest factor in the game -- much more than Sammy's poor shooting night -- was the continued absence of Carmen Gfeller. That means two frosh (Pirog, 18 min. & Burton-Oliver, 8 min.) and sophs Lisa Kiefer (14 min.) & Dani Bartsch (17 min) covered the post & power forward positions in Gfeller's absence. I especially like Alex Pirog's potential, but it's going to take awhile for her to get used to the college game. Kiefer played a solid 2nd half, especially on defense, but Montana got 6 points of offense from their front court. Until a healthy Gfeller returns, it's going to be a learning experience for the Griz front court.

The good news, to me at least, was the play of frosh guards Mack Konig (18 minutes, 5 pts.) and Libby Stump (16 minutes & 2 points). Both played solid, aggressive defensive games and Konig showed promise tonight of contributing offensively as well. Sr. guard Katerina Tsineke played only 6 minutes... solidly on defense with 2 misses on treys. Sammy looked like she was pressuring herself a bit, But her floor game on both ends of the court was outstanding. I'm going to assume her shooting % will improve steadily as the season progresses.

Gina played a very solid game and, as she did in the scrimmage, looks to get the ball to others from her position in the post. She was getting doubled up frequently by the Bison D (It looked like a matchup zone with hedging & switching to cover both Gina and Sammy.... but still scored almost at will. I believe she could have driven all night, but that's obviously not the kind of offense that wins games later in the season.

I felt good about the outcome. Montana had its chances but missed several open looks in the final two minutes. It won't be easy until Gfeller returns, but it does mean that the frosh & sophs will get solid opportunities to get accustomed to D1 hoops. Go Griz.

Obviously the Lady Griz need Gfeller back.

Gfeller, Fatkin, and Marxen will give the Lady Griz a very solid trio. Post scoring was almost nonexistent without Gfeller.

make even a decent clip of their FTs and that was a win going away.

Definitely some issues there. Overall shooting %s:
- FG % 37.9
- 3pt% 28.6
- FT % 52.0

I'm hoping this is 1st game jitters :)

I watched most of the first half and bits and pieces of the second, and my immediate thought was those missed free throws were going to come back and haunt the LG and they did.

For much of the first half they had free access to the paint and NDSU struggled to stay in front. They just failed to convert those opportunities and that unto itself changed the complexion of the game as they let NDSU hang around.

Like last year, length caused the LG issues and seemed to do so again as soon as NDSU figured out how to effectively hedge and switch. I don't have a problem with Fatkin's shot selection as most of them came somewhat within the offense. As long as Gfeller's out, they are going to lean heavily on Fatkin for scoring punch and she on a few occasions skipped the stop and pop mid range stuff and pressed her luck into the key. She just struggled finishing had she been closer to her efficiency she showed last year, the LG win that game going away.

Whether by design or sheer circumstance Marxen and Fatkin got a ton more opportunities and a couple of other players who I would have expected to get looks (Bartsch, Huard) didn't see the ball as much in scoring positions. Bartsch may have been a bit of a victim of needing different personnel on the floor at times last night, but I would expect her to provide some much needed scoring balance as the season goes along.
