Let's Hope Stiles is Okay

Bummer. Hopefully she will be ready to play at the start of next year.

Skyla Sisco (sp) had an ACL during her sophomore season in a february game against Boise State and was able to play at the start of her junior season. Everybody is different but hopefully Stiles can recover in time. Skyla seemed a step slower her junior year but seemed to have regained that step in her senior season.

Doesn't look like Shannon will be taking a player like Gabi Harrington off red shirt. I had thoughts that may happen.

She certainly could make it back based on time. A lot has improved in ACL reconstruction, even in the last 5-10 years. The key is just as you said...everyone is different. I'd bet, though, that there is NO RUSH on this. Just get her healthy for the longer term. Nothing wrong with starting later in the season.

Any word on whether Valley plans to try one more year, or did she make the decision to not return next year?
This was supposed to be Valley's senior year, after redshirting her junior year (making her a redshirt senior) - she (and the university) could try for a medical redshirt, but I believe she is done. I could be wrong though.

She has yet to announce her decision.

Probably be better to just have Stiles redshirt next year regardless. That way she can regain her strength and speed and as well her confidence in her game. Katie Mayhue is now listed as a 5'11" guard that had recently scored over forty points in one of her recent games. If one's taking into consideration next year's possibilites.

With the rash of knee injuries that has happened in Scheweyens 2 years of coaching, you've gotta wonder, is it bad luck or does it have something to do with how they're training?

Add in MaKenna McGill, CF’er for the softball team.

From the sounds of it when MaKenna hurt her knee it was from running into the center field fence after catching a fly ball so that was quite a bit different then the Lady Griz basketball ACL injuries which all seem to be non-contact. My daughter tore her ACL in a high school soccer game when she made a cut with the ball that she had done a hundred times before.

It was hyper extension on the landing before I hit the fence. Freak incident and ACL’s are uncommon in softball but female athletes are at higher risk of this injury. For several reasons but I put myself in a volnerable position when I landed and put my knee in jeopardy.

Thanks for the complete info! Best wishes to Montana Softball, starting Thursday vs. GCU. Especially wish good health to you & the entire team! Also note for egriz SB fans, Montana's first two games will be streamed by GCU. Go Montana.

Doc, how much of a role is stem cell treatment playing in these types of injuries or surgeries. I know some Ortho's who say that's gonna be the next big thing and preliminary data is extremely impressive.

Great question. I think it may be huge. There are inherent issues, as again, everyone is different. It has shown some real great results with partial tears "growing" back. I can't wait to see more long term studies.

Just sent my nephew a text on stem cell use in knee injuries. He's a 4th year orthopedic resident at UCSD. He played 4.5 games of football his senior year at Dartmouth, as a cornerback, with a completely severed ACL. Didn't get the diagnosis until right before the last 2 games. He had avoided getting an MRI initially, because he didn't want to know how bad it was. Just kept playing. Then wore a brace. Said it was harder to play knowing that he had the ACL injury. Apparently had a naturally tight knee.

I can't believe women athletes get so many ACL injuries, especially in hoops.

Yes...many thanks GrizSB for having the courage to come on this board and clarify your injury. BEST of luck in your rehab and here's to a great season for you and your teammates and you are back on the diamond soon! :thumb:
