(Lesser) Conference Championships

There have been some damned good (competitive, close) games in the lesser conference championships ... with a few upsets. Right now, at the half, NDSU and SDSU are tied (23-23). Meanwhile, BYU has played Gonzaga tough, although that's changing (Gonzaga 46-40 with about 3min left in the first half).

In the long-held eGriz tradition of "counting our chicken," we have to view some of the "lesser" teams as second round (NCAA tourney) opponents. So they're worth watching, even if you don't much care about BBall unless you "have a dog in the race."

I like to see these early games to fuel a minor amusement: picking what teams are going to get bids to the "Big Dance." You need to know about possible upsets in the weak "one-bid" conferences to decide who among the lesser power conferences teams might get bumped. Since 2003, I've have used a pretty simple formula to pick who gets bid. (And no, I don't look at "good wins" or "bad losses", or any of those details.) I've never missed more than two, and almost every miss has been ones that the "pundits" bitch and complain about anyway.

Looks like North Dakota State won @South Dakota State tonight. So NDSU, the team the Griz beat earlier this year, is going to the NCAA tournament after winning the Summit League (ranked much higher than the Big Sky) tournament.

Most of the Griz pre-season was top notch to at least average this year. Unfortunately we only broke even in the Summit Conference with our "wounded loss" to South Dakota when were missing three starters; Breunig, Weisner, and Jermaine Edmonds Jr.

The lady Griz had the ultimate RPI builder losing to the regular season undefeated Princeton.
