Since I've been asked literally seven hundred times I figured it's time to put up a post about what you can do in Laramie besides watch the Griz lose (ha!). I know you guys love to drink .. you will not have a problem drinking in Laramie. It's kind of what we do down there. Granted, I haven't lived in Laramie in 11 years when I was in college, so a bit has changed but from what I remember...

Bars: The Buckhorn will be a must. I believe it's one of the oldest bars in Wyoming. Friday night might be a bit of a college bar, but Saturday morning should be fun down there. Lovejoys was a favorite of mine, Thursday nights they used to have pitchers of Jack and Coke and fishbowls of Long Islands for $8. God I miss college. There are many bars downtown Laramie, which is near the 3rd and Grand area. 3rd Street Bar is good too. Away from downtown is Mingles.

Restaurants: Altitude Chophouse has pretty good food, and they brew their own micros in house. I would say this will be a good stop for anyone. Lovejoys is downtown (as noted above), they have bar food. My favorite Mexican restaurant is probably El Conquistador also downtown, mostly for the stuffed sopapillas. Lots of people like Corona Village, It's Rocky Mountain quality Mexican food. If you want an upscale type of place the Cavalryman is your pick. I hear good things about Mizo Sushi if that's your thing. If you're hammered at midnight or 2am I highly recommend Shari's.. it's basically what Finnegans was in Missoula before they closed. Friend of mine recommended Born in a Barn, The Library, and Roxy's.

Things to do: If you're feeling froggy there's some good hiking you can do in the area, you can climb to Medicine Bow Peak, well over 10,000 feet, or you can do some hiking out in Vedauwoo. My roommate in college used to get high out there all the time. The Old West Territorial museum is also in Laramie. If you want to golf you can play at Jacobi Golf Course, decent course. If you want to do shopping.. lol, drive to Fort Collins.

Enjoy the scenery in Laramie, the campus is terrific.. take a walk around, the stadium is great (recently renovated), the Arena Auditorium where Cowboy Basketball plays is undergoing a 30million dollar renovation. Parking for the game probably won't be a lot of fun, but I think it's probably better than Griz games. UW is expanding and growing their campus like crazy, TONS of new buildings.

We'll be having a WyoNation.com tailgate across from the Indoor Practice Facility.. we'll have some beer pong and shuffleboard going on. Stop by and say hi if you're in the neighborhood. If you guys want to grab a beer Friday night hit me up, I'll be around somewhere (sans funnywater because his lazy ass isn't getting in until late). If you have questions hit me up, I'll answer as best I can.

The Virginian and Billings Poke can probably add to this as well.

Go Pokes!

I have a question: How does a guy who LIVES in Missoula, claims to be a Griz fan and is a fricking MODERATOR on the GRIZ internet forum actually root for a team like Whyoming just because you went to school there?

With all due respect to Mr. T, the best time to see Laramie is at night during a blackout. We were kidding when we were there that the coaching staffs for the various sports must drive to Denver or Cheyenne, pick up their respective prospective student-athletes at the airport, and then blindfold them for the drive to Laramie.

Maybe it has changed a lot in the past 17 years--we were there for the '97 game and were not impressed at all. My friend got food poisoning at one of Laramie's finest restaurants and barfed in the parking lot--it's no wonder why several UW students told us to drive to Fort Collins to eat.

I know it is an excellent school, like UM. And my cousin from Montana graduated from Wyoming. But why anyone in Mont. would attend school there given the town and the surrounding area is beyond me when they could attend UM, MSU, MSU-Billings, Tech, Rocky, Carroll, or UM-Western. I guess if you love high, desolate windy plains, Wyoming would be your kinda school.

And I and many of my friends have observed that is why Wyo. probably goes through a lot of coaches--hard to recruit kids there !!!
