The University of Montana women’s basketball team will face Maryland, ranked No. 2 nationally in 2008-09 preseason polls, as part of the Caribbean Challenge in Cancun, Mexico, over Thanksgiving break in November. The Lady Griz will also face a pair of 20-win WNIT teams from last year, Illinois and South Dakota State, at the round-robin tournament. Games will be played Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26-28, at the Moon Palace Resort.

The Terrapins have gone 95-14 the last three seasons, with an NCAA title in 2006. Maryland was 33-4 last year, finishing second to North Carolina in the ACC with a 13-1 league record. The Terrapins made it to the Elite Eight of the 2008 NCAA Tournament before falling to Stanford, 98-87, in a regional final game played in Spokane, Wash.

Maryland will return three starters in 2008-09, including pre-season All-America candidates Marissa Coleman (6-1, senior, guard/forward) and Kristi Toliver (5-7, senior, guard). Toliver won the 2008 Nancy Lieberman Award in April as the nation’s top point guard.

“This tournament is obviously the highlight of our non-conference schedule,” Montana coach Robin Selvig said. “Maryland is one of the top teams in the country with exciting players. I got a chance to watch them in Spokane, and they are a really talented outfit.”

Illinois went 20-15 in 2007-08 and made its fourth straight appearance in the WNIT. It was the Illini’s 11th post-season tournament appearance in the last 12 years. Illinois ended its season with a 72-64 loss at Marquette in the WNIT’s third round.

Jenna Smith (6-3, junior, forward/center) was a first team All-Big 10 pick last year and an honorable mention Associated Press All-American.

South Dakota State, the 2003 NCAA Division II national champion, made the move to NCAA Division I play in 2004-05 and has continued with the success the Jackrabbits experienced at the Division II level. SDSU went 21-7 in 2004-05, 19-9 in 2005-06, 25-6 in 2006-07 and 23-7 last year, with its second straight trip to the WNIT. South Dakota State made it to the quarterfinals of the WNIT in 2006-07 before losing at Wyoming, the eventual WNIT champion.

The Jackrabbits won the Summit League regular-season title last year with a 16-2 record. The coming season marks the team’s first opportunity to advance to the NCAA Division I tournament.

“Illinois has a really good program, and South Dakota State has done remarkably well in their transition (from Division II to Division I),” Selvig said. “That’s an impressive team with the type of wins, especially on the road, that they’ve been able to get the last few years.”

Lady Griz fans can purchase travel packages for the tournament through Triple Crown Sports. Fan packages include resort accommodations, unlimited meals and beverages and admission to the games. The Moon Palace Resort features 2,031 rooms (most with Caribbean views), 10 buffet and a la carte restaurants, seven bars, including swim-up bars, two oversized pools and two fitness centers.

More information is available at MontanaGrizzlies.com.

“I’m sure we’ll have a pretty good following on this trip,” Selvig said. “This is a fun trip for the players as well. We have done Hawaii, which is a similar type trip, but this will be our first time to Cancun. It’s an opportunity to play against some of the best teams in the country in our non-conference and the type of trip our fans can have a lot of fun with.”

The remainder of Montana’s 2008-09 schedule is still in progress. The Lady Griz will return four starters from last year’s team that went 25-7 and advanced to the program’s 17th NCAA tournament.

Dear Coach Selvig: i understand you are an interesting driver; under no circumstance should you drive in Cancun; those folks have a well known prediliction for stopping gringo drivers on trumped up charges; I am afraid that if you drive we won't be seeing you for a while; your friend, yogi

The Lady Griz aren't going to win this game and it likely isn't going to be close but playing a tough opponent early is going to go a long way in helping them prepare for the post-season. I like this scheduling decision.

Yogi,

Good stuff! Selvig is the main reason GPS systems were invented. :thumb:

How in hell do the Grizzlies stay in competition with the caliber of fans this board demonstrates? How in hell do you know that the Griz will not beat Maryland? Why bother spending money and effort on such things as athletics since both men and women, basketball and football are condemned every year by their own fans to be less than all others. Reading these posts make makes me sad....I think it is a great tribute to Montana U that our women's program is getting the kind of recognition that its own fans won't give it....from outsiders who know the game, not to mention the purpose of it all.....

how in the hell can someone with the self-professed sophistication of sixtyseven not understand the nature of anonymous, for-entertainment-for-better-or-worse sports message boards? hint hint they are full of hyperbole, self-righteousness, and exaggeration. some of it is done in order to make a point, some to try to be funny, some to anonymously express anger at society, some to just be obnoxious, and some out of plain ol' stupidity. anyone who takes a message board like this at face value, and assigns to the common (name your team) fan the same feelings and dispositions as those expressed herein, is... well... not as sophisticated as you want us to believe you are.

oh damn, i forgot to mention your incredible success and moral superiority. so sorry.

Huh? Obviously you have never read anything on this board (or even this specific thread) because I think the Lady Griz get lots of support from the fans on here.

Trust me, I love the Lady Griz and am friends with many players on the team but there is no way they will beat Maryland and unless you are actually suiting up for that team, you'd be an idiot to think so. But if you want to go put your money on it, then knock yourself out.

However, like I said before, I believe that playing a team of this caliber can only help the team when it eventually does get to the NCAA tournament.

Soooo, why bother going to the NCAA tourney if they are just going to get beat? Hate to say it, but you have lost before you even start....

Lost what? Am I competing in something here?

Not a single thing you have said in this thread has made any sense but, I guess, thanks for playing.

You are welcome....you are right...the Lady Griz will lose badly to Maryland and that will sharpen them up so that when they play in the tournament, they will be able to lose to someone else, but not as badly....that is your thinking, isn't it?

You would not play on my team....and I would sure like to have you play for the other side.....good luck to you.

Really not that difficult of a premise. You play a tough non-conference schedule and it toughens you up for the post-season so you could maybe make it out of the first two rounds (see: Griz football's 2007 season). If the Lady Griz make the tournament, they aren't going to play a team as highly-seeded at Maryland but they'd likely play a decent team so they could put what they've learned to good use against someone that is going to be much better than any team they've played in the Big Sky.

And being as you are appalled that someone would even suggest that UM couldn't beat Maryland, I am going to guess that you aren't that bright of a person. So it's probably good that you're aren't going to let me play on your team (sad) because you've already proven that your decision-making skills are, at best, questionable.

Peace.

Yes, of course, you are correct. You seem to be well acquainted with losing....fortunately, I am not used to losing, and do not support it...You, on the other hand, seem very young, and very much a loser with a loser's attitude...I like that in young people...it made me wealthy. Have a nice day and pray for bad weather and a falling economy...losers get what they project....you don't seem like a bad person, just a person with a losing attitude....frankly, I am glad the UM women's team seeks out the best to play.....they might just think they put their uniforms on in the same way (to paraphrase an old jock saying)....NEVER DISCOUNT A HUNGRY AND AMBITIOUS TEAM OF TALENTED ATHLETES, whether it is Montana v Maryland, or App. State v Michigan.....
