Lady Griz/Vandy Game thread.

Re/MaxGriz said:
Well, watched the whole game and it's obvious that we were no match for Vandy. It's a bummer to see the season end this way, but I gotta give the ladies props for a very successful season and all of the fun memories.

Perhaps the most surprising thing of the night is reading this thread - some of the posters in it went from predicting a 4 point LG win to calling for Robin to be fired and saying this team needs "ghetto girls." Wow... I'm speechless seeing the fan base just flip a 180 in a few hours.

crazy isn't it

The Irony in this thread...

The football team has some bad seeds, and we hear, "Get rid of these ghetto thugs!" Now the Lady Griz lose a game to superior team and we hear, "Get us some ghetto kids!"

The Lady Griz win one of the most competative Big Sky conferences in a while, they're the toast of the town and yet after just one game the team and their coach is being referred to as if they only won 8 games the whole year.

The man who made (and keeps) this program amazing is asked to be fired by someone who apparently only judged him on this one game and seemed to forget the 697 wins Robin's also had.

And bringing in a girl who has dark skin isn't just going to mean she'll be an All-American...

But you're right about recruiting attitude, though. Back when the LG almost knocked off LaTech in '04 it was because we had a baller in Julie Deming. I thought this year with Morales and Rogers the confidence and attitude would be there, and that we would have players wanting to take over the game. You might say Vandy was so much better than the LG talent-wise (and admittedly, they were) but as evidenced by the LG's early free-throw % (which VU couldn't affect in any way) the LG were really tight to start this game. You do have to have talent to work with, but it's all about belief after that...

And saying winning in the BSC doesn't mean anything makes me chuckle when we have beaten the likes of supposedly "big" name colleges in the last few years (Florida State, Washington State, Gonzaga, Wyoming-not big name in my book but in AP poll, Miami, Utah, Pepperdine, Syracuse, and Memphis just to name a few) during the season. Even though we can beat those big names, come tourney time the girls always act like they don't belong there and that they are in awe of the other teams (ironic since some of the ones the LG are in awe of, they have beaten).

Anyways, I'd rather win 20+ and be out in the first round than struggle to make double digits for wins if we brought in a new coach which you know would be the likelihood of happening...

Selvig, Hauch and Tinkle have all tied-in emotionally with the UM fan base and boosters. No non-white coach could have survived their individual failings.

Let's bring in some coaches with dark skin and see how long they are allowed to be popular losers. I'd bet, around 2 seasons or less. But this will bring in the type of coaches that can recruit the type of players that are dominating at every level of sports.

:tounge: Oh, a little unPC thought.

As Cheney says, "So".

You know your post is in trouble if you start quoting Cheney. You obviously have no knowledge about athletics, coaching, or anything regarding the University of Montana. WOW! I think Mslacat had it right

So now O'Day is supposed to fire Hauck, Tinkle and Selvig????????

Unbelievable. We now officially have some the most spoiled, unrealistic fans in the nation. I don't think anyone else is even close.

Well put GP. For the record, I thought the Beatles sucked too. I never understood the Stones either.

Good post, I say recruit the talent and not the skin color, we've had (and seen on other teams) plenty of incredibly talented players that are of all sorts of ethic backgrounds. Heck, most of Vandy's players were white girls!

The argument that if we get players from (insert racial background here) and we'll be better is flat out wrong. Follow the talent - regardless the player's ethnic background.

Robin with his limited recruiting budget does his best to get the best girls possible. But they are only able to really recruit Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and the Portland area. Rob goes after every girl he believes a D-1 athlete, but loses the most talented to UW, UO, and Gonzaga the last few years. The ladies program has very limited resources which makes it impossible to recruit areas in Cali, etc. It is also funny how people praise Rob for winning with Montana girls until the tourney, and then complain about who he recruits.

I notice that as well. I also notice that every year it turns into a race discussion. Fortunately there are not too many "fans" out there who will call for Robin's head. He has done very well for the Lady Griz and has earned and deserves more respect than that.

Seems no coach is good enough for some Griz "fans."

The team with the better athletes almost always win..when they don't it's considered an upset.

Switch coaching staffs last night and who wins?

Announcer said nobody on the Griz side could start for Vandy.
He said Mandy would get some minutes but that's all.

Same applies to those on the football board that wants Bobby's head... Players are more important than plays.

Bronco's have one one playoff win since Elway retired...same coaches that were called a genius when they had the superior players. It's always the players.

There's a saying out there that says "you don't get something for nothing." You can go out there and recruit a boatload of Ghetto kids to make your program more competitive, but it may result in a loss in your fan base. Having all the home-grown products gives the program its identity. If the Griz started outsourcing for athletic talent just to compete with the big schools, my support for UM athletics would wane. I suspect I would not be alone. :twocents:

I'll admit using the term "ghetto kids" was perhaps a bad choice of words. The point I wanted to make however is that I feel that there would be a loss of interest in UM athletics by homegrown folks if the rosters were to tip heavily in the direction of out-of-state recruits. Thats what has appealed to me about UM football. Not only has the program has been successful, for the last 20+ years, it has been accomplished with a healthy stock of Montana talent. Besides all that, look around and you see all the big schools that recruit some of the best talent around the country still doesn't guarantee them national championships.
