Lady Griz Recruiting.

Jamie Pickens and Shelby Schweyen are the commits.

Do not know any players they have offered.

I would suspect recruiting is a little difficult at the moment. With the budget problems at UM they are trying to recruit in state when possible. Also, with the "vibe" going around numerous circles I have heard that some AAU coaches are steering players in other directions.

As far as I know the only commit that isn't signed is Joelnell Momberg, as she's only a junior at Class C Box Elder and has another year to go. Outside of Momberg, there really isn't anyone I can think of that the Lady Griz are pursuing, in Montana or out of Montana.

Jamie Pickens and Shelby Schweyen are already signed to the program for next season.

The two commits they have both committed last year. Sure hope their budget wasn't hit too hard recruiting Schweyen!

Good point on recruiting from home. If budget is that big of a detriment, them the program is screwed. The world changed and there just aren’t enough good players coming out of Montana. Top that off with the stupid AAU crap going on. If a player was good enough they may fly under the radar because mommy and daddy don’t have the dollars needed to fund the travel and expenses associated with that program. I don’t envy SS. Not an easy job, especially when there are so many other things to do besides play basketball. She has to humble herself, adapt and be a better sales person than the next coach. Not sure she can do that.

I was told by a couple of different individuals, that the travel budget not the recruiting budget was the primary method to align costs. I could be wrong, but I had that on good accord and know that each program with in the department were expected to find ways to align the budget.

The women's recruiting budget has been always shockingly low. In part because of the dependence on Montana players but because Robin recruited a bit differently than most coaches do in currently. That practice works, it only works, when you take every DI girl out of the state of Montana. In recent years Robin and Shannon haven't been able to do that. The Tinkle girls, Barta, and a bevy of others have been lost to out of state schools. Because of Montana's (the school) diminishing status regionally, you can't count on word of mouth or state cache to bring talent.

There IS enough talent for Montana to recruit heavily from the state and win. Be regionally competitive, maybe. Nationally. Heck no. Montana still produces excellent HS girls players at a rate that likely exceeds traditional economic predictions.

Honestly it was going to require a significant change with Shannon to restore some semblance of normalcy to the recruiting practice. Her recruits in two recruiting cycles don't reflect a significant deviation from past philosophies. Mayhue and Fatkin represent a wider circle, but it still doesn't expand beyond the traditional recruiting areas.

Citay has mentioned in past the recruiting deficiencies of Robin, and if the program wants to expand its footprint again then Shannon or whomever is going to have to look outside its regional footprint. There is no reason for the program not to be able to recruit California heavily. But it requires spending time on the AAU circuit, and I just don't know if that is a philosophy this current regime embraces.

If it is Shannon, or if not someone else, someone has to make a radical change in the women's recruiting practices to return the program to its former place as a regional elite program.

Another thing to look at is the difference in High School ball and College Ball especially in the Girls game... When I interviewed Holly Tyler on my show, she said there wasn't another 6' girl in High school, in Idaho, so she dominated down low...When she walked onto the Court in Missoula, she was one of (3) 6' girls, just on the griz team. That is on coaching, and growing players from freshman on...That part is on the coach, and it is something that Binford has been great at, and Shannon seems to have struggled at. Shannon has also been bit by the injury bug a LOT the past two years, and had 3-4 players quit the team for one reason or another.....
