Lady Griz: Can you coach shooting?

OK, it is fairly obvious that the moment, the LG is a poor shooting team, possibly statistically the worst Robin has had while coach of the LG. Also no secret is that the team is made up of very young talent with the majority being FR and So. My question is can shooting be coached or is it simply a natural ability that the current set of players lack? It would be telling to know if the average player gets better at shooting over the span of their career but simply looking at stats can be misleading because so much changes as a function of time. For examples:

- A player might start at the one spot and then move to two and shoot better or worse as a result of assists or different kinds of shots while not having fundementally better shooting skills.

- A player may not be regarded as the premiere scorer on the team one year and draw lesser opponents on defense but then get the best defender the next year when they the best because of graduation of the former best.

- A player like Shaq makes the players around him better shooters by drawing double teams and giving other players more open looks which are at least theoretically easier shots.

And there are many other such intangibles that affect stats.

So the question can the LG get better at shooting as a function of time or are they pretty much destined to be poor shooters and have to win other ways like rebounding and defense (which appears to be the way they have won many of their previous games)?

1. Coaches can teach the players better shooting technique which may improve shooting percentage.

2. Also, coaches can teach the players on working harder to look for the best shot. While the Lady Griz did get some good looks that missed, there were some poor shot selection.

Improvements based on the above two points do not neccessarily happen over night. Point 2 would be the most difficult one and an area that can be improved the most and will take the most time.

Everybody has an "off night". Unfortunatly for the LG, they all were "off". It happens.

Look for a blow-out Saturday night.

Yeah, but how often does it need to happen before you conclude that there's a pattern... and a biiiig problem?

Everybody did not shooting bad. Conway, McLeod, Guardipee and Morales were a combined 14 of 32 or 44%, everyone else went 4 of 31 or 13% including Edwards and Closson going 3 of 25. When WSU made there big run to take it to a nine or ten point lead in the second half we only had Morales on the floor who was shooting well.

Morales shooting percentage was close to the teams average, 5 - 14, 2 - 6 from inside the 3 point line. Guardipee was 2 - 6. Neither player shot well.

Conway and Mcleod were the only players that shot any good. But, the players that shot the most were the ones that weren't shooting very well. Conway and Mcleod just weren't able to get very many good looks at all.

I may have just witnessed worse shooting and it was from professionals. The Utah Jazz and Sacramento Kings game just ended. The Kings just went 0-20 in the 4th quarter to lose a gam,e they had dominated for 3 quarters. I guess it can happen to anyone.

Yeah, it happens. But, this thread wouldn't have come up if it were just one bad shooting game by the Lady Griz. It has been going on for most of the season. It just happened to get worse against EWU and WSU.

Season is not over yet, but this years shooting is worse than any season since late '70s. I read that in the Missoulian either this week or last week. I believe the article had the year though.

I do expect things to improve as the freshman and sophomores improve, which they are improving in many other areas. Shooting will eventually come. Hopefully it will come in time before the season is over. Just need to win the tournament.

I actually am surprised the Lady Griz defense is so good considering all the youth on this team. Zone defense is really not the easiest defense considering the amount of communication required for it to work.

If the Lady Griz can start shooting the ball better, they will not be beat. Hopefully by time I get back from Florida next saturday, the shooting touch will appear.

They shot the ball a lot better early in the season. All these girls could shoot just fine earlier in the seaon. I am confident they will get it back. One way is to not shoot so damn many 3's. Even Jordan would get in a slump. When he did he worked for better shots closer to the basket, then he moved out to the perimeter.

Selvig has that zone down to a science so that part doesnt surprise me a bit.

75% of the Lady Griz shots are 2 pointers. They are only hitting 40% for the season inside the arc for the season. Early part of season shot same percentage of 3 pointers as now. Shooting percentage has been under 40% for most of the season with maybe a handful of games if that they shot over 40%.

Only the first few games when Mandy Morales returned did the number of 3 pointers drop. But, now opponents know about Mandy, and have devised plans to stop her and Mandy isn't getting inside as much. Thus back to the 3 point shooting as it was early in the season. Lady Griz are having a harder time getting inside shots. They are also missing open 2 point shots more frequently.

Best Lady Griz starter is Guardipee and she is making only 42% of her shots. she is pretty much all inside.

Best shooter on the team that shot more than 10 shots is Sonya Rogers, but she also shoots less than 45%, though over 50% from 3 point line. Selvig really yelled at Sonya for not taking a shot he thought Sonya should have taken near end of first half against Weber State.

but, I hope the Weber State game is the valley and they are going to start climbing a mountain, shooting gets better. I know they are better shooters than they were at Weber State.

I guess Idaho State cant shoot huh???? 54-25 Lady Griz at the half. I guess Selvig hangs onto his job for another day.

I guess the doomsdayers are no where to be found tonight.

what a bounce-back game by the Lady Griz. They lead by 41 with over four minutes to play, and have already scored 91!!! Good golly, miss Molly!

Oh yeah, the "lurkers" are real bold after the fact. Didn't hear a squeak this morning...

To those who predicted a blow-out. You nailed it! Great win ladies. Keep it up. I want to drive to Missoula to see you host the tourney .
