Lady Griz came out a little lucky today, despite 21 turnovers and poor free throw shooting from 5 minutes left in regulation on. Lady Griz made 14 out 16 at one point and finished 26 - 38 from the free throw line.
Cats played a very physical game, which is the primary reason for the number of fouls called on them, but it really was the only way to defend the Lady Griz due to the height advantage the Lady Griz had over the Cats. It did cost the Cats in the end. Free Throws made up the difference for the Lady Griz over all the 3 point shots the Cats made.
Primary reason for the turnovers and the ball handling is the point guard play. That position alone accounted for just under 50% of the total turnovers. Monaco had 6 turnovers and Schmitz had 4 turnovers.
The players of the game for the Lady Griz are:
Juliann Keller who scored 23 points on 7 - 9 shooting from the field, 2 - 3 from 3 point line.
Laura Cote, scored 11 points, on 3 of 4 from the 3 point line. She was the spark the Lady Griz needed. Once the Lady Griz got going because of Cote, they shot better, handled the Cat Defense much better, and better ball handling. Trouble is, free throw shooting became a problem.
Players of the game for the Cats was Tanner. She made 15 points from the 3 point line, 17 points overall. Nelson also scored 17 points on 7 - 10 from the field, 2 - 4 from 3 point line. Both of those players were hot as a branding iron. Don't think any team really would have stopped either of these players today the way they shot the ball.
You may say the Lady Griz did not shoot free throws in the clutch. But, Hollie Tyler and Julliann Keller did. Would have lost the game without their free throw shooting at the end. Also, the Lady Griz did buckle down and played very hard on defense when they really had to at the end.
Plus, when it is a Griz-Cat game, anything can happen.
I do predict Lady Griz to split the road trip next week. But, Sac State is a much better team than any year before this. It won't be easy.
