LA Griz: Lonzo Ball

Several years ago on this board, LA Griz alerted us to an incredible high school team in Southern California, Chino Hills. They were undefeated, and one of their players, Lonzo Ball, was putting up unworldly numbers--25 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists, 5 blocks and 5 steals PER GAME. I had to see this team to believe it, and I did. It may have been the championship game against De La Salle, the football powerhouse from the Bay Area. De La Salle was able to slow Chino down, but not for long. After halftime, it turned into a rout, if memory serves.

But the kid that caught my attention was not Lonzo but another little kid who was playing on the varsity in the ninth grade, and almost literally heaving up shots from the corner with deadly accuracy. And the kid was fearless. Sadly, he was just too small ever to amount to anything, and I totally forgot about him until I realized the other day who that kid turned out to be: LaMelo Ball.

I believe that team also had the middle Ball brother who seems to be a G League or pro in Europe and also Onyeka Okongwu who was a one and done from USC last year and was drafted 6th by the Hawks. Combined with the Ball brothers, that team had 3 top 6 picks in NBA Drafts.

Amazing team. Not deep, totally top heavy, I think they only played 6. Pretty sure Lamelo was only an 8th grader! Reclassified to be able to play with his bros. LiAngelo was actually the leading scorer for them. 3 lottery picks on 1 team!
