Kudos to the (Revived) Student Section - PSU Game

The "remodel" killed the student section in my opinion. Paying for it was premised on taking away cheap student seating. The final nail was the invention of winter session when the school switched from quarters to semesters. Dennison tried to eliminate winter session but met fierce faculty resistance. I think eliminating that would give the students a fighting chance to fill the seats and possibly return the Zoo. If Engstrom succeeds in gutting the school and its faculty, there will be less resistance to eliminating the winter session because there will be less faculty and those remaining will be afraid to speak up. (I found the silver lining of the Engstrom administration!). ;)

It "filled" a little after the under 8 minute timeout and they invited people to come down to the lower level. The section they have now is rarely even close to filled. For some reason, these kids think football is the only game in town.
Students are not going to football either. The um claimed the lowest amount of student tickets last year than any of the last 5 years. The UM is doing a terrible job at marketing and making events fun.

Like most employees, Engstrom has no idea how money is actually generated. He has no leadership ability and no real understanding of capitalism. He has gone to the mailbox every two weeks his whole life and a check has always been magically inside. I hope the Regents wake up before the whole thing goes to hell over there. (And yes I know that sounded whiny).

I appreciate that, but it will never be the same until they move them back to the zoo. I truly believe if they do that, it will help basketball performance, basketball recruiting, and also football recruiting(since they take recruits to the basketball games during their visits). Come on U. Put them back in the zoo. It would be awesome.

If the court side chair seats and many of the seats near the court were to become student seats, there wouldn't be enough money in the budget to recruit. Those seats bring in a good chunk of revenue. The chair side seats are almost $1100 per seat with required GSA membership. Other good down front seats are almost $600 with required GSA membership. If there were 20 court side ($22,000) and 200 other seats ($120,000) taken, that would be a revenue loss of $142,000. Many of those people spend money for food and drink up in the Sky Club too, as well as concessions. I suppose some of the 200 other seats might be at a lower cost, and, of course, some, but certainly not all, of those people would buy seats somewhere else at a lower cost. Moving those people, who probably like their seats and being close, would also be disruptive and have some cost. Some of those people are significant donors to basketball and football and would likely get irked over this. I think the revenue loss, as well as the loss of goodwill, would be significant.

I have six of the sideline chairs and they do cost a lot. I would give them up gladly if the students would support the team but I don't think they would. Plus the winter session screws attendance by students.

If the proper basis on which to make this decision is economics, then obviously Duke should confiscate student seating as well.

It should not be only a short-term economic decision because a good atmosphere will bring in more net revenue eventually.

Students aren't going to make for a good atmosphere. The whole crowd would need to be into the games, and attending, to make a good atmosphere. Students sure aren't going to attend games when they're in finals, home for the holidays, and not back in school until late January. Just not going to happen. The Zoo is gone forever. On the other hand, the student section could certainly be bigger and better. The hardcore group in the center in the past two games are a good start. Also, many schools have good student sections in the end zones.

PR's facts are accurate in this case, as is stated by TDMT also, the semester is killer. As an old 80s and 90s zoo member it's just not gonna be like that when the students miss weeks of the season. The seating doesn't help but it's still effective at times. By the end of conference play last year the crowds were good and the students got some life. Kudos to the wackos
that fire up the student section.

It's not the semester that is the killer it is the 3 week winter intersession in between New Years and when the semester starts. MSU is on semesters but they do not have the stupid intersession. They started the Spring semester on January 8th, we started on January 20th. If you got rid of the intersession you maybe have a one week difference between the Christmas break under the old quarter system and the semester system we have now.

True, but if there weren't semesters, the quarter would start early in Janaury.

One thing I have heard is the non-traditional students that bring their little kids and sit in the student section are a bit of a downer, telling other students to tone down the language. Very few college kids want a 35 year old single mom siting next to them with her kids when they are trying to get rowdy.
