Like I said in another post, I'll be back! Win or Lose.

GRIZ FANS: MEET JOEY THOMAS!

I wouldn't be shocked if nobody meets Joey Thomas on Saturday. Cold day, cold hands, lots of running against that 258-pound interrior line of the 'Cats. Those kids should be puking their lungs up by the third quarter. What are you feeding those guys, Slim Fast?

I'm shifting gears a little bit here, but saw a great quote from Kramer in today's news in the link from the front page. Kramer, in breaking down the game:

"In the kicking game, Montana has been at
least equal to ours except that they have a decided advantage at kicker. "

??

If I may paraphrase, "They're about as good as us except way better."

Did I miss something or do I just not understand what he means when he's talking about the 'kicking game'?

Funny quote by Kramer (btw, is he any relation to Kramer on Seinfeld?) but I think what he meant was our punters are about equal but our place kicker is better than theirs.

I believe Kramer meant that in all aspect of the kicking game (punting, punt returns, kicks(off), kickoff returns, and field goals) we are pretty equal, with the exception being that Snyder gives the Griz a big advantage in kickoffs and field goals. I would beg anyone to argue with that. Your punter may have a better average, but Lulay has only had punts returned for a total of close to 30 yards for all his punts, so I would venture to guess that our net punting has to be pretty close, especially if you take Nate Cook's punts out of the equation. Obviously, we both have great punt return and kickoff return units. In my somewhat biased opinion, I would give the Bobcats a very slight edge in those categories, although not enough to make a big deal. Both teams have had very questionable kickoff coverage units, and I think that could play a role in this game... if there are very many kickoffs. I tend to think there won't be.

Anyways, just my thoughts on clarifying Kramer's statement...

Hey BC,
I'm no expert when it comes to the cats.
Why does lulay punt.
Did you have a punter early on.
Injured?
Sucked?
Just curioius thanks.

BozoneCat: You could probably work that into a full-time job without a lot of effort. I'll bet even most 'Cat fans think he needs a publicist or part-time SID to "tweak" many of his statements.

Bozone - what is your kicker like. What is his longest field goal this year? Do they have any confidence in him? (Not digs, I just don't recall much about him).

grizpack

Nate Cook 30-32 PAT. EWU miss killed them, 8-14 FG long 42 yards

Short kickoffs and out of bounds kickoffs killing them all year.

Turnquist is the holder and had to be replaced last game. This is causing some troubles.

Why am I answering for the kittys.

I think you guys have a BIG edge in punt returns. Smith is your best hope of keeping close...... I think most Griz fans would have to agree that Smith is the best return guy in the BSC....with LV a somewhat distant second. ANd I will curse everytime they kick it to Smith Sat.

Without getting into actual statistics (because I actually am trying to get some schoolwork done this week, with little progress so far - I mean, how can your profs expect you to study anything but game film this week?!?!), I can tell you my observations concerning Cook and our kicking game. First, I think Cook is pretty good from 35 yards in as he is actually pretty accurate. He simply has no leg strength, though. This hurts on kickoffs too, and I wonder quite often if we would be better off just kicking it out of bounds on every possession (somewhere Geoff Groshelle is grimacing). Fact of the matter is, Kramer has zero confidence in Cook, and I don't think they like each other all too much. Another fact, in our favor, is that Cook has proven to be very good in clutch situations over the last couple of years, he has never missed a field goal late in the game that end up costing us. He has missed PATs in consecutive weeks, but the PSU one was in the rain and was a bad hold, and the EWU one was with a brand new holder right after Turnquist went out. I wouldn't count on him missing any PATs this weekend, I mean if you can't hit PATs you don't deserve to win the Big Sky. And for all you funny men, I will interject the inevitable "sure he won't miss any PATs, he won't get to attempt one" joke right here and save you some time. Cook also kicked the most beautiful on-side kick you have ever seen against NAU and almost got one against Idaho State. So, in summation, he does have some good qualities, but is very inconsistent and has a very weak leg.

Thanks for the clarifications....
You're probably right, the quote makes more sense taken in that context. I considered it at first, but it seems like I've also heard people talk about "the punting game" and "the return game", and wasn't sure if they were separate from the "kicking game".
Plus, it's more fun to make ASS-umptions when you're dealing with a Kramer quote.
