Key seniors in 2019 vs 2018

As a much disgruntled Packers fan I was reading some tweets and articles on key players the 2019 Packers need to build their team around as an obvious re-structuring is needed for them. Made me think that Bobby and this staff is in the midst of the same and how the amount of vital guys in 2019 is going to be a much larger pool than 2018's.

One thing that I'd heard Bobby say his first time around as a coach here and again this last year is that good teams have great groups of junior and senior leadership and starters. The 2018 team was fairly light on seniors that were on-field starters and major contributors, statistically. You had Buss on defense as a major contributor, captain, and stud defender. Beyond him though you had some steady contributors like Shaw, Miller, Tilleman, Williams as a punter, and Curran despite a bit of a bummer senior campaign. You had great vocal / motivational guys like Tilleman, Davis, and Curran and some guys that were good ST contributors like Epperly, and other dudes like Hill and Lee that got few reps here and there but were more a testament of staying true to the team and their teammates for the season.

The 2018 team graduated 4 senior starters on defense (Miller, Buss, Shaw, Tilleman) and 1 senior starter on offense (Curran) but one could point out that Miller and Curran both rotated a lot of time.

The 2019 team, however, will feature a BIG group of regular on-field contributors who will be seniors and will either be starting or presumably on the 2-deep.

On offense

Dalton Sneed, QB
Jerry Louie McGee, WR
Colin Bingham,TE
Angel Villanueva, G
Cody Meyer, C
Dallas Hart, G
Cy Sirmon, G/C

On defense

Jesse Sims, DL
Dante Olson, LB
Josh Sandry, S
Justin Calhoun, CB

On Special Teams
Both Tim Semenza & Brandon Purdy, K/P

Other 2019 seniors: Adam Wilson, P. Kobey Eaton, CB. Kadeem Hemphill, CB. Jalen Hemphill, LB (I wonder if they got an RS though?). Vika Fa'atuise, LB/FB. Andrew Harris, LB.

-------------------

I would think barring something crazy all 4 seniors on defense will start. On offense the skill guys presumably will, and I would think that all of the OL guys will get a look but it's tough to say if all will be starters, maybe 2 of them? We'll have to see. That would mean that the 2019 Griz have a little bit more senior representation on the field, which is something this coaching staff likes to have, however still the majority of the starting contributors on this team will most likely be sophomores and juniors.

These Griz are building and could (in theory) have a larger group of regular on-field contributors than 2018's. Does that mean the season will go better? That's tough to totally say but if you believe what Bobby preaches for his ideal types of rosters, this helps.

We started but 3 seniors (all on D) for the MSU game; MSU started but 6.

Technically they made some funky tweaks with the roster for that game. If you pull the participation report it shows Curran, Buss, Shaw, Cochran, Miller, Tilleman, and Epperly (at CB) as starters. Presumably just a move to honor some of the seniors. However Cochran did do some more edge/DE work in the last few games as both Nelson and Nagler were dinged up.

I was going from depth chart listed for the game - the 1's for the offense and the defense.

I’d hope they move Sirmon & Longoria back to defense. Alford played a bunch but they’re thin behind him. Time for the RShirt guys to step up. Sain, Martin, Anderson & Ganoung all dressed & played @ times on game days. & they have several candidates like Kanouse & Quick who should be pushing for playing time.

Hopefully Angel, Hart & Scott all heal up & can compete. With the new guy & others in the roster, there are enough bodies. Time to step up.

I'm optimistic about 2019. Absent three key fumbles, we would have been 9-2 this year with a very young squad. We return nearly all skilled players and our O-line has to be better next year - how much better remains a question. Our schedule will be more difficult but I think we will have more success.

I could be wrong here but I think they're hoping that Sirmon could develop into a reliable OL starter for 2019. Longoria I'd love to see back on the D-line, would be a great boost to the one group that actually lost a lot to graduation this year.

Sirmon may also play center.

Agree with Ranco. Add in a couple missed calls in the last game real close to 9-2. See what happens in 2019.

i believe Sirmon and Meyer had their callenges last year and are going to have to really improve their play this next year in order to start....the young guys were highly recruited, with the body type etc....we should see a huge improvement this year with the younger players. imo.

With all due to the staff & Sirmon, & God bless him for putting that team first, but if your best prospect & guard or center is a converted linebacker, there are talent problems that need to be addressed & soon.

He showed up in Missoula @ 225 lbs & @ 6’3” & 270, already one of the strongest guys on the team & I think he’s the perfect bookend in the rotation with Sims & Deming. He’s 30 lbs. light for guard or center & nobody adds 30 lbs of quality weight in between seasons.

Neither team was exactly a BSC powerhouse. Any research on senior starters for NDSU or EWU?

Agreed 100%. He's way more valuable (IMHO, and I'm told we're all allowed them here) on the D-line next year, assuming there's adequate talent/depth on O-line...it actually appears the depth issue might have switched sides of the ball this coming year...
