Kevin Earl broken thumb

South Dakota's starting quarterback Kevin Earl sustained a broken thumb against Oregon and did not play last weekend for the Coyotes against William Penn. Earl, Vander Maten, and Bouma are all back for South Dakota and that trio did a hell of a job on the Grizzlies last year in Vermillion. The Coyotes struggled against an NAIA team without Earl in the lineup but pulled away late. Their backup Ryan Saeger is a 6'4" 220 pound Sophmore (big kid!). He only had to throw the ball 13 times last week-threw a pick and was sacked 3 times..... It will be interesting to see if Earl can go next week. He makes South Dakota a lot tougher opponent IMO.

Out 6 weeks. Thumb on right/throwing hand.

"It was easy to see that the junior from Illinois was struggling with the idea of sitting out the next six weeks of the season watching from the sidelines while his Coyotes have to move forward without a signal-caller who was expected to make the jump to offensive standout in 2014.

"After I finished a throw I smacked it on somebody's helmet," said Earl, who tried to return after the injury but was obviously injured. "I've never been put in this kind of situation before so it's really tough to handle. You never want to miss any games. You put a lot of work in the offseason thinking it's going to help you be ready to go for 12 weeks. It sucks when half of it is taken away."

Earl got at least a little dribble of good news when he learned they don't have to insert a pin in the bone to get it to heal correctly. The break, which is in the thumb between the knuckle and the wrist, was diagnosed as a likely fracture after the game in Oregon. On Monday that was confirmed, though surgery was averted."

That's too bad. Happy to hear he's only a junior and that the pin wasn't required.

SD had moved Vander Maten to wideout last year, so they must feel they're pretty desperate at QB if they've moved him back.
