The Montana Grizzlies have another men’s basketball player in the fold - head coach Wayne Tinkle announced Thursday that Jovanni “Jio” Sims has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Griz starting in 2006-07.

Sims, a 6-4, 205-pound forward from Milwaukee, Wis., attended prep school the last two seasons at Genesis One in Mendenhall, Miss.

“He’s an absolutely great kid who will lend himself to being a great teammate because of his personality and work ethic,” Tinkle said. “He’s probably one of the most athletic wing players that we’ve had in our program in the last 25 years.”

“The coaches and players have been great in my transition to Montana,” Sims said. “I’m comfortable in Missoula. I’ve been able to talk to people around the community. I know this is the place for me.”

At Genesis One, Sims averaged 12.5 points, five rebounds and three steals per game in his fifth year campaign. His prep school coach was Victor Evans.

“Jio brings great basketball intangibles to the floor,” Evans said. “He’s a tough-minded player who does the little things that don’t always end up on the stat sheet.”

Sims is one of the Grizzlies’ most touted recruits in recent history. Hoop Scoop online ranked him as high as No. 75 on a list of top 150 fifth-year players in the class of 2006. Sims was one of eight Genesis One players to be ranked by Hoop Scoop this past year. Sims’ teammate Michael Washington, a 6-10, 235-pound center heading for Arkansas, was ranked No. 7 on the same list.

“Jio was my favorite player on the team,” Evans said. “He’s a difference maker on the defensive end, but he’s also a better offensive player than people give him credit for.”

Tinkle said Sims should help the Griz on both ends.

“Aside from his athleticism, the most impressive thing about Jovanni is his ability to defend,” said the first-year head coach. “Most kids that age haven’t quite learned how to play defense. He was obviously coached very well because he is a hound on that end of the floor.”

It appears to me Tinks is doing just fine, the naysayers are sure quiet now. :thumb:

He signed last May so technically he is still a Larry K. recruit, he attended Genesis One prep school in Mississippi last year. He completed high school in the 2004-05 season but choose to take another year of high school (5 th year) at a prep school. I can not say why but usually a kid will do that either to improve his shot at getting a high level scholarship, by playing an extra year of basketball at a very high level, or because he may need to boost his grades for one reason or another. Genesis One along with all prep schools in the nation had to have there academic program approved by the NCAA this spring and summer. Genesis passed with flying colors and Sims was approved / qualified in mid July. He has been on campus since early summer working out with the team. Genesis One is considered as one of the top high school / Prep programs in the country, last I heard they were placing as many as 6-7 players in D-1 schools off of last year.

A final note: if you look Mr. Sims up on the net/Google he seem spell his first name as"Giovanni", but every one I have talked with here in Missoula is spelling it "Jovanni"

MslaCat,

You probably know better than anyone, but one of the things LK disliked was recruiting. I think Tinks was more involved, or maybe I should say LK was less involved than most Head Coaches. What is your take?

Tinkle and Huse did the majority of the Griz recruiting, but this is typical as the assistants have more opportunity to get out and meet the recruits than the head coaches. Larry was the closer, "Hi I am Larry K. ex-NBA pro come play in my program" again this is pretty typical. I think it also explains why all of the recruits felt very comfortable with the program when Larry left.

The one exception was Vanderjact (SP?), Larry recruited from start to end.

LK didn't have to do much recruiting on Vanderjact as his former player from CBA days, Casey Cavalry (Gonzaga) pretty much did all the recruiting for him.

They say this kid is extremely athletic. I hope he is because I wanna see some gnarly dunks this years. I wanna see some posterizing. Does he have 4 years of eligibility? Is he more like a 2 than a 3, or what? he doesn't have great size.
