sorta ironic, because dawkins's mentor, coach k, got off to a dismal start at duke as well. lost out on several high-profile recruits, and didn't get that program back on track till year his third year there. history could repeat itself with dawkins.
AT one time, that might have been true, but today, the kids travel, go to camps, AAU, and other outlets....good players are everywhere....good coaches, well, that is another thing entirely. Stanford doesn't seem to have the coaching staff they wanted or thought they had, but then, winning is not the number one thing on the Farm...Sugar Bear 16 said:citygriz said:stanford's head coach, johnny dawkins, is off to a dismal start. they had a losing record last year, one of their best players may be out for the year this year with a mysterious injury or illness, and they are predicted to wind up dead last in the pac-10, while mike montgomery's cal team is favored to win the conference. but dawkins's incoming class, including heustis, is excellent, and i'm sure he'll get that program back to the level montgomery had it at stanford.

I'll beleive it when I see it. I personally don't think Heutis is Pac-10 level, he's defenitely Big Sky potential, but Pac-10 that's a stretch. Ivy League he's good enough for that level as well. I think if he played in a more competitive high school situation in a bigger Metro Area he would have the potential then, but not coming out of Montana High School hoops.

you are right; i stand corrected. i must have been remembering that dismal january-february stretch where they lost eight of ten pac 10 games. in addition, they won the play-in game to the pac 10 tournament before losing to washingtion in the quarterfinals, then won two games in something called the CBI tournament.
i in no way intended to demean dawkins, because he coaches a fun style of up-tempo basketball, and he will definitely get this program back to the montgomery-era level of excellence.
by the way, i don't smoke. not since the eighth grade. can't blame that.
Lot of people in Palo Alto don't agree with you....I hope you are right...WaGriz4life said:citygriz said:wagriz4life:

haha I figured you just remembered their terrible record against PAC 10 teams and just assumed they had a losing record. Most of these schools play such weak non-conference shedules which makes it really hard to have a losing record.
I think Dawkins is gonna do a great job at Stanford before taking the Duke job when Coach K retires.
and I gaurantee you that will happen.

Most Stanford fans don't care who coaches as long as the program is competitive...Like Montana, there is no shortage of people who would like to be affiliated with excellence...WaGriz4life said:Stanford is a stepping stone for Dawkins to go to Duke and for Harbaugh to go somewhere bigger like Michigan or Notre Dame depending on how their coaching situation shapes up in the next few years.
Stanford fans know this but are understandably in denial.
