Jimmy Rodgers leaves Wazzu

. . . Early Friday afternoon, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Penn State had worked out an eight-year contract with Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell to replace James Franklin in State College. Roughly seven hours later, Iowa State announced that they had found their next head coach: Jimmy Rogers. The news comes less than a week after Rogers completed his first regular season at Washington State, leading WSU to a 6-6 overall record and a TBA bowl berth. The news also comes just two days after Washington State signed 28 players to their 2026 recruiting class. WSU announced additional signees roughly five hours before Rogers' hire at WSU was announced.

. . .
Rogers was hired by WSU following the 2024 season. He spent the two seasons prior as the head coach at South Dakota State, his alma mater, where he won the 2023 FCS national championship. Rogers spent 13 seasons as an assistant at SDSU, including the 2022 season as the Jackrabits defensive coordinator, helping them to their first national championship under John Stiegelmeier. He also spent the 2012 season as a graduate assistant at Florida Atlantic. When he arrived in Pullman, Rogers brought more than a dozen transfer players with him from SDSU. As a Division I head coach, Rogers has accumulated an overall record of 33-9. The 38-year-old is a native of Chandler, Arizona. Washington State parted ways with Athletic Director Anne McCoy, who spearheaded the effort to hire Rogers, last month.

They have an interim in place, buys everyone a little more time. Would WSU want Vigen again? Vigen clearly looking to get out of Bozeman for the right opportunity…

Feel bad for the Wazzu faithful. They’ve had it pretty rough for awhile. So much for that loyalty speech he gave at his intro press conference.

The interim athletic director says they want a Coug someone that had ties to the program and will stay at least three years.

Brent Vigen can learn a thing or two from Rogers and Eck. You too can quickly climb the coaching ranks if you’re not so picky about what your next job is. Last year Rogers was at SDSU, and now he’s coaching in the Big 12. Eck looks like he’s gonna ride it out another year at UNM, but with another good year will be a P4 head coach.

I get that Wazzu and New Mexico aren’t the most attractive places in the world, but if you’re successful at those places, you will be able to get out of there quickly.

Take the time to watch Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard’s impromptu press conference on YouTube by Quad-City Times. Explains Roberts asked him a couple of years ago what it would take to be the head coach at ISU if Campbell left. Pollard told him he needed to find a next level head coaching opportunity above FCS SDSU. So he did and here they are.

The dude can coach, he proved it this season!

The question now is how many WAZZU kids, including SDSU, does Rogers take with him to Ames, and how many kids, incoming high school and existing players that feel like they were abandoned on a sinking ship in Pullman and want to remain in the NW rather than travel 2,000 miles east and two time zones to the Midwest, do we want and can possibly pick off ?

WSU fired their AD so the interim gets to make the hire. Most logical would be to go with the current DC (who will coach the bowl game) but he is very tight with Rogers. I would think he would take a head coaching opportunity and would be able to maintain at least some continuity. Otherwise, they will be scrambling again…second year in a row. Portal is coming up in a month, not that WSU has a potent NIL to buy players.

He has had a few good years with salary increases. I am not going to ascertain what his salary has been over the past few years.

My guess is that he probably quadrupled his salary from his last season at SDSU in taking the job at Wazzu. He probably will be quadrupling his Wazzu salary going to Iowa State. Even if he only triples his Wazzu salary he will still make 10 times, give or take, more at Iowa State than he would have if he stayed at SDSU.

I would have probably done the same thing if I had been fortunate enough when I was 38 years old. Heck, not probably I certainly would have done so if I had the opportunity.

Am I surprised that Iowa State hired him as quickly as they did, of course.
