Jamar for Big Sky POW!

Besides being the glue that held the Griz together for the win against the Cats (against huge odds), I think Kareem has been the X factor in Montana's impressive run in Big Sky play over the past three weeks.

ya think..

Thursday
PSU, Lillard 40 PTS, 1 REB, 5 AST

Saturday
@MTST, Jamar- 21 PTS, 2 REB, 3 AST

NoCo, Lillard- 35 PTS, 3 REB, 5 AST

Yes I do think. Jamars play in the cat game was by far the most impressive of any BSC player, even if DL and scored a hundred. Everyone expects DL to score over thirty, Jamar held a team together when cherry, selvig and ward were in foul trouble and Steward was having a quite night.
Damian is a awesome player but give credit where credit is due.

Jamar is one of the most complete players I have had the privilige to watch in my 60 years of watching Griz basketball. He is soooo smoooth. He has a great attitude and is a team player. We are very fortunate that he chose to be a Grizzly.

No disrespect to Jamar (should be a 1st teamer), but like it or not there is no way in hell that Lillard, who averaged 37.5 pts a game this week while shooting 69% from the field, doesn't get POW.

I didn't start this thread to get into a trash-talking exchange with Wildcat boosters. Lillard is awesome and his stats for the weekend are impressive. I mean absolutely no implicit or explicit put-down of Damian.

I was simply marveling at Jamar's second-half leadership and how he carried the Griz during Cherry's strangely refereed, foul-prompted benching.

So, I'll side with Mavman & particluarly with Maroonandsilver's description of a young sophomore guard whose play is more impressive week by week. However the official declaration of the week's best is meted out is really academic to me: Jamar's effort was good enough to qualify for POW on most weeks. And his steady play bodes well for the Griz heading into the final weeks of Big Sky play.

Seconded this.

But to get on the topic of Jamar, there is no question he was excellent last night and has really been fantastic all year long. He has a really complete game, and is very fun to watch. Assuming Lillard goes pro, I think Cherry/Jamar could enter the year as the top candidates to be Big Sky POY next season. It is tough to pick one over the other.

maybe the thread title through me off...

maybe Tinkle could give out team awards every Monday morning though...

I didn't see any trash-talking, just stats & the obvious

This weeks player of the week is like the season standings: Any other year the griz record of 8-1 in conference would be good for a couple game lead for first place, however weber has one more win. Any other week Jamar would be player of the week but lilliard will win it this week.

While all that may be true (and it is), do the people who vote for POW look THAT far into it? Or do they just look at stats?

WSUnPurple is most likely correct. Lillard's stats lines are proof of two outstanding games from the Big Sky's marquee player. He'll probably get, and deserves the weekly POW.

I would hope, however, that league voters give Kareem's inspired game some consideration (maybe a "Co-Player of the week recognition).

That's all past. What encourages me about KJ is his tremendous growth in maturity and leadership this season... and what that means for Montana's short- and long-term future.

And -- though I can't quite match Maroonandsilver's 60 years as a Griz fan (I think my first Silvertip basketball game was in 1953) -- I agree word-for word with what he wrote about Kareem Jamar:

Jamar is one of the most complete players I have had the privilige to watch in my 60 years of watching Griz basketball. He is soooo smoooth. He has a great attitude and is a team player. We are very fortunate that he chose to be a Grizzly.

DL will, and deserves, to win PoW.

However, Jamar was simply the most important player to his team in a huge win.

My hunch is, Kareem would happily take that over PoW one thousand weeks out of one thousand weeks.

Will alicia smith get pow for women? She had 3 daggers down the stretch in a close game

I read on ESPN (can't link it as I can't access ESPN on this computer) that Andy Katz voted Lillard National POW along with the guy from Kentucky. Getting some national recognition. Said something along the lines that he would probably be the highest scorer drafted if he came out this year.

Co-players of the week: Anthony Davis (Kentucky) and Damian Lillard (Weber State)

As for Lillard, he may end up being the top playmaker taken in the NBA draft if he leaves after his junior season. And before June, there's a chance he'll be more of a known commodity if Weber State wins the Big Sky Conference tournament and plays in the NCAAs. Lillard has the capability to dominate the ball and will his Wildcats to a tourney upset.

The 6-foot-3 guard scored 75 points in two games this past week. He scored 40 in a 92-79 win over Portland State and then followed that up with 35 against Northern Colorado. He made 25 of his 36 shots (69 percent) -- 11 of 17 from long range -- and also found time to dish out 10 assists.

Lillard certainly fills up the stat box with his nation-leading 25.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 3.8 apg for the Wildcats, who sit in first place in the Big Sky at 10-1. Montana is lurking just behind and Weber is certainly no guarantee to win the conference tourney. In a way, that would be a shame. Lillard deserves the national stage, even if it is only for one game.
