Ivy League Just Cancelled All Spring Sports

The wimpy Ivy presidents cancelled all spring sports. Part of the stated reason was that some schools have already cancelled classes, and are going online.

This will be crushing to individual athletes especially seniors.

no doubt it will be crushing to them. i suspect that when all the facts become available, the seniors will either think the decision was a good one, or, if it turns out speculation about the coronavirus was overly pessimistic, they will remember the decision with some bitter. my guess is that most student-athletes at that level of intelligence will put the physical well-being of society above their own desires, in cases like this.

Most competitors in college spring sports affected by this are probably very disappointed and pissed.

Like me, I assume that most of them see no connection between the well-being of society and their spring sports.

With the tide of (unnecessary) actions that seems to be coming, the harm to education, the economy and similar things is going to far outweigh the benefits, in my view. If/when more k-12 schools are closed (I'm not talking about places like Seattle), who's going to take care of kids who won't be at school, but whose parents work? Money to pay for daycare is one thing, but where are zillions of day cares going to come from overnight? How many kids not in schools are going to get in trouble or get harmed? People need to work. They need money to live.

it is a cluster-fuck.

With the media getting everyone lathered up and in a frenzy I almost feel sorry for the various institutional powers that be. Damned if they do and damned if they don't. Unfortunately the world we live in these days.

Daaaaaaamn! Belgrade’s Erin Elgas pitches for Brown University. That would suck. She single handedly pitched Belgrade to back to back state titles and was the best pitcher in MT high school last year.

What year is she? That’s cool.

She’s a true freshman and had already appeared in every game I believe. She’s lucky being just a freshman. These poor seniors. I pray the ncaa makes an automatic exception for them to all get a year back.

How are they damned if they don’t? The US has about 1250 active cases. Of those, 10 people are in serious or critical condition. I bet they are all over 60 and most over 75.

Overreaction. Irresponsible media. We need to try to impeach Trump again to give the media something to do. Even the Dem primary is losing its interest.

The additional year possibility is interesting.

There’s Ivy rule, at least for football, that graduates can’t play. I assume it’s for all ivy sports.

Thx. I will follow her in the future and spread the word to my family, 9 of whom have now gone to Dartmouth including the 3 marriages.

What we have here is what is known as a “Wicked Problem.” There is just no real good answer to it that makes everyone happy. My company has been responding to schools, facilities, retirement homes, and hospitals through out the Pacific NW to decontaminate or “deep clean” as some have said it. The media is really not to blame for this one.

PR, look at it this way: a kid that competes may contract COVID-19 and be sick, but not overly so. This same kid can have contact with people who are older or more immunocompromised. While not dangerous to the kid, it IS dangerous to the older or compromised individual. Look at it this way JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) reports a mortality rate in China of 15% of those over 80 and 8% of people aged 70-79. Of all critical care cases, 49% of people died.

This is serious. I’m Oregon, State Medical officials believe that there will be 75,000 cases of this by mid May if there are no measures taken. If the mortality rates hold true, that is 1725 deaths from this alone. Italy, an advanced western country, has had 827 deaths so far.

As a proportion of population, yes, it is small. I know the flu kills a ton more every year (about .014 to .07% of those infected, or 12,000 to 61,000 per year). The scary part is that it is new, it is an unknown. There is no vaccine. Health workers are not as protected from it like they are from the flu. With a significantly higher mortality rate than influenza, if we get the influenza infection rate of 9 Million (CDC’s low end of influenza estimates). Combined with the 2.3% mortality rate, that is 207,000 fatalities (assuming 9 million infections. At the high end, it’s more like 1.035 million)

I’m not fear mongering. These are facts. Professionally I HAVE to take this seriously. If you want a citation list I can give it later. My thumbs hurt.

WA around Seattle has a different problem with most other places.

No cases in MT, yet. No deaths in State of NY, yet. Miami-Dade County has 1 case, and it's a travel-related case.

37,000 people died of the flu last year. The CDC estimates that there have been this many deaths this flu season, thru Feb.:

"20,000 – 52,000
flu deaths". https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm

"Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the flu kills 290,000 to 650,000 people per year."

I agree that businesses, schools and other organizations have to on top of what is going on, and make certain decisions. But unnecessary panic is not a good decision. I have advised companies on risk for other 45 years.

I would say that whether a college kid is in spring ball, or in school, or not in school, isn't going to move the needle.

The mortality rate for people without underlying health conditions is tiny. .9% in the US for people of all ages. Again, all ages. Even older healthy people are not dying. The US currently has 10 people in serious or critical condition.

Oregon has 19 cases. WA has 373. WA has 30 of the 40 deaths in the US. MT is one of 6 states with no cases.

Italy is not a good example. Italy was asleep. The US wasn't.

See this very good up to date, daily, website: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

The US Defense Department said on Wednesday it was slashing participation in what was planned as the largest joint US-Europe war games in 25 years due to the threat of coronavirus transmission.

“After careful review of the ongoing Defender-Europe 20 exercise activities and in light of the current Coronavirus outbreak, we will modify the exercise by reducing the number of US participants,” the US European Command (EUCOM) said in a statement.

Looks like wimpy US Generals are being alarmist as well. They do tend to follow whatever the left-wing media tells them.

Exactly why the US is taking the steps they are.

The US has 10 deaths outside of WA, and 10 people in serious or critical condition.

Italy has 15,000 cases and 1061 deaths. 2651 new cases today and 189 new deaths. A mess. China has about 3600 deaths. 18 new cases and 11 deaths today. China, if they are to be believed, has really had a huge decrease in new cases.

Europe has many cases and deaths and new ones too. Some places there are a mess. The US doesn't. It's not a big deal to postpone or cancel operations like this. I support things that make sense.

I didn't see left wing media telling the military to cancel the joint exercises.

The US was "awake" because of what happened elsewhere. And by being "awake" they are taking precautions. Not super difficult to understand.

The biggest thing the US did was cut off flights from China fairly quickly. And now the US is cutting off most flights/people from Europe.

The US didn't order the cancellation of spring football practice.

PR, remember: age is an underlying condition with this.

I was illustrating the consequences of doing nothing. Close proximity situations is a great method of transmission for these types of infections. Think aerosols. Small droplets from a cough or a sneeze. A bunch of kids in a classroom, at a sporting event, anything like that aids community spread of this allows for it to travel to stores, bars, home with family, when they visit Aunt Sally. They do not have to be symptomatic to be contagious. USAMRIID (US Army) war games for this. Schools and sporting events are IDEAL locations to spread infectious disease as these people go home or travel.

Play it safe. PR, what advice would you give clients to mitigate risks? I don’t mean to sound like I’m attacking anyone, I’m just talking from my perspective in the HazMat industry.
