Hauck has been notoriously vocal about not wanting to play freshman. We only saw Gilman last year at the end of the season when we had injuries, and we could still salvage his redshirt. I was surprised that Young made this trip (5 backs for this trip) and more surprised that he got playing time this early in the season, even if he is the highest ranked recruit we've had.

Is Bobby moving away from his longstanding position on development and paying dues so that we landed this kid and trying to keep him? Is he just changing strategies with the new landscape with the portal? Is Young that good already?

Freshman can play in four game and still keep their redshirt. Blowouts are the perfect time to gain experience.

I'm well aware of the rule, and we had 4 blowouts to start the season last year and knew what we had in Gilman. He didn't see the field or make the road trips. It just is very interesting that the freshman would make the first road trip of the year. Curious as to the rationale behind it. Maybe it is merit. Maybe it is other factors.

Did you watch the NDSU playoff game last year? Gilman had 6 runs for 36 yds., with a long of 17.

I believe merit plays a part and also the transfer portal that has players not staying on one team for four years. If I were still coaching I would reevaluate how I develop and utilize young players.

I watched the EWU and the NDSU game. Did you not read my first post?

That’s what I believe we are seeing. Playing guys as freshman and utilizing their talent while we have them if they end up transferring. What’s the point in redshirting a kid, saving his eligibility and putting in the effort to develop him for another team.

I do think Hauck and staff have done a good job retaining kids versus the average over the last couple of years, but I see this as a big change to a long-standing mentality that he has had through both tenures.

You honestly think our coaches are not playing the best players? You realize they film and grade every rep of every practice right? There is nothing in the world more merit based than this.

Absolutely coaches always play the best players available and have always. I have never understood this "feeling" that you burn a red shirt year if you play a talented player during their freshman year when they are ready to contribute.
