The University of Montana Grizzly basketball team has added a junior college standout to its 2009-10 roster, announced fourth-year UM Head Coach Wayne Tinkle.

Raason (pronounced: ray-sahn) Young, a 6-6, 190-pound (three) forward from Hagerston (pronounced: Hay-gers-ton) Community College (Maryland) has accepted a scholarship to play for the Grizzlies. He will be a junior at UM.

Young is one of four additions to the Grizzlies’ roster. He joins three players from the prep ranks: Will Cherry, a 6-1 combination guard from McClymonds High School in West Oakland, Calif., Eric Hutchison, a 6-9, 215-pound post player from Mark Morris High School in Longview, Wash., and 6-5, 190-pound forward Thurman Woods from Dominguez High School in Compton, Calif., all received scholarships to play for the Grizzlies in the early signing period last November.

Young, from Washington, D.C., was a first team All-Maryland JUCO team and All-Region selection last season for the 22-9 Hawks.

"We are excited to welcome Raason to our program," Tinkle said. "He’s a very athletic wing player and plays with a high level of intensity. We fell he will be a fine addition to our team, especially defensively . He shoots the ball well from three-point range, and adds a lot of athleticism to our perimeter players.

"We feel like he, along with our three freshmen signees, has helped us improve our athletic needs," Tinkle said. "They are all great kids, and this could prove to be a pretty special class for us."

As a sophomore, he averaged 18.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks, shot 45.5% from the field, 79.3% from the line, and 37.1% from three-point range.

He scored a career-high 42 points in a 117-93 win at College of Southern Maryland.

"He is a kid whose motor never stops," said Hagerston CC Head Coach Earl Redden. "He works hard in practice, and is constantly trying to get in the best shape possible. He wants to be a winner.

"He’s got some gifts," Redden continued. "If he plays under control and works within the system and exploits what he can do, he will be one of the better players in the conference. With his range and skills he has a chance to make it to the next level."

His freshman season he played junior college basketball at Missouri State University - West Plains, where he started for the 27-5 Grizzlies and averaged 8.0 points and 4.0 rebounds a game.

"I was impressed with the coaches and the players when I visited Missoula," Young said via a telephone interview. "I feel like they have good players there right now and that I fit in perfectly with the team."

Young prepped at John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he played basketball.

Raason’s mom is Carlotta Young of Washington, D.C. He plans to major in sociology. His birth date is une 16, 1988.

By the press release, he sounds like the type of player we really need. I like that he is athletic and a hard worker. I like this years class a lot, but trying not to let my expectations get to high to soon. I still question our inside offense and rebounding. Maybe additional athleticism from the 1,2, and 3 positions will help compensate in those areas. Then again, maybe Selvig, Qvale, Ward, and Hutchison developed nicely in the offseason.

I really do hope with the added athleticism we press and trap more. In Qvale and Selvig we will have very good paint defense and shotblocking. Johnson, Cherry, McGillis, Young, and Wood all should be athletic enough to apply more pressure.

It sounds like we go from 1 true SF to 3 SF. McGillis, Young, and Wood all appear to be true 3's from what I read of what Tinkle has said. It is encouraging this means Staudacher will be able to concentrate on just being a True SG, and 3 point threat. I replayed a few of the GRIZ games on dvr, there was a huge difference in Stauds shooting effectiveness. I watched games against Duke, Washington, and Northern Arizona. I honestly feel Staudacher not only was focused on more as the season wore on. He also was physically worn down, he was asked to do too much defensively. Early in the season and all of 07/08 he consistently squared up and great mechanics. The 2nd half of last year, he was not consistently square, had less elevation, and noticeably drifted left or right instead of going straight up. In turn his shot was flat and less rotation than what he had before. Eventually this had to effect his mentality too.
I hope the new additions will lessen the defensive burden for Staudacher, and we get back the sharp shooter he is. I will be looking for that early in the year.

Speaking of shooting, last year we only had one consistent 3 threat as it turned out. Despite his struggles, that was only Staudacher. AJ improved as the year went on. McGillis was not the perimeter threat or offensive player most us were expecting him to be. Hasquet was inconsistent also from 3. We could have really used Matt Martin for a spark last year, and missed him more than anyone projected.

As for Wood and Young, I hope that motivates Jack to play better more consistently. It sounds like both these guys are capable of getting rotational minutes, and even take minutes from Jack when needed. I think both these guys will help Stauds and McGillis for the better.

If our perimeter game improves, it will also open up the paint for our bigs. I will be praying Cherry and AJ form the penetrating guard combo we have lacked since Criswell and Matthews departed. I cannot wait until tipoff! :)
