Is Stanford any good?

At 54-48 it was "only" a 6 point loss, but that doesn't change the fact that right now anyway this isn't a very good Cardinal team. Cal-Davis also won over Stanford in football which must be additional fodder for some embarrassing sports columns in No. Cal.

At this time, Stanford isn't that good. But, Stanford has some good players, and could be a good team by the end of the season.

Griz and Cal Davis may have played Stanford at the right time.

Stanford may not be a "good" basketball team at the moment but lets face it, Montana has not beat a team with such prestige at home for quite a while now. It was a big win no matter what stanfords record is, was or will be!

I think that Stanford will go on to have a decent season in the Pac 10. The teams they've played early had a whole lot of intensity because of the name they were playing. Stanford just didn't play with the intensity needed to win those games.

Once the conference schedule starts they'll finish probably 2nd or 3rd. It just seems to me that they haven't figured out how to play as a team right now. They have some scary talent though - that's for sure.

The Griz appeared to easily be a much-better team. Hernandez is ok, but he got out-played by Martin and Virgil. He is 24 years old. He SHOULD be good. Harryazs is tall and can rebound, but he is no NBA player, no way no how. Any legit big-man would neutralize him. Grunfeld has an NBA dad and some skill. He's Criswell with a bigger body, nothing too special. This is a VERY over-rated team. Arizona and UW are much much better. Stanford will be lucky to be middle-of-the pack unless they drastically improve.

Not trying to sour our win, but it is appearing less and less impressive every day. Stanford will be lucky to have a winning record.

The Griz were up and ready for the Cardinal. The Cardinal were certainly not ready for what was coming. The Griz and particularly Jordan and Virgil played out of their heads.

So what to expect? I do not know. Here are some numbers to ponder.

After five games Virgil Matthews has scored 49 points; 23 of them coming in the Stanford game.

So far, Jordan has scored 35 points; 20 of them in the Stanford game.

This is in no way meant to be a negative post. I certainly hope the team can play with that kind of intensity.
