Is Mick Stubborn?

I believe we are fortunate at UM to have Mick as our coach, however, it seems apparent that he may be stubborn and resistant to change. Few would argue that our OL is up to the standard of past Griz teams, yet below par play is allowed to continue. Why? When these players were recruited did our coaching staff think they were capable of competing at the FCS level or were they recruited without adequate knowledge of their potential? Do we have anyone on our coaching staff able to teach these student-athletes how to play on the OL? Do we have anyone on the bench....defense or offense anxious to step in during this time of desperate need? Knowing Mick's experience and knowledge is it time for him to coach the OL? I realize we have lost players resulting from injury and poor grades, however, the time has come for action.

I would have to think Gragg has a much better chance of coaching OL than MD. That said, it's obvious that we miss Bob Beers badly.

I think this conveys the behavior much more accurately.

However, don't be too quick to blame that on the coach's age. A lot (and I mean a lot) of football coaches have that same oink-headed streak when it comes to the running game. Several times -- really -- this weekend as we watched football all over the country, we saw cases where the offense, even after getting stuffed on 2nd and short, pounded the rock on 3rd and shorter, and then again on 4th and even shorter.

One "expert" commentator -- the usual former player -- for one of the FCS games put it this way: "Coach figures, if they can't get a half yard on fourth and short, they're not going to win this game anyway." And that was a young, "up-and-coming" coach.

Now, I totally understand and agree that you still need a credible running offense to win games. But it should not always be straight-ahead, mano-a-mano pound it (maybe) down their throat.

One of my favorite play sequences down near the goal line is: (1) Pound that rock between the tackles. (2) Pound that rock ... gettin' closer. (3) Vocally rah-rah the O-line to "get after'em." Deep fake to running back slanting inside, QB peels back and walks in for the TD while the defense does a dogpile in the middle. (Saw that a couple times this weekend.)
