is big football ruining college sports?

an interesting opinion piece by the university of san diego president was recently in the nytimes. he opines that the power 4 football conferences should split off from the ncaa and quit dragging the rest of the schools along the current path they are taking in terms of rules changes, etc... here it is:

Even if the big ones split off, nothing is going to change about the direction of college sports until the NCAA can win a court case. That won't happy until Congress gets them an anti-trust exemption and, uhm, good luck with Congress agreeing to much of anything at this point....

It will change the playing field in terms of who is making decisions for the good of those schools not in a P4 conference. At the very least they will have a seat at the table and ultimately reap the value of the decisions made...

Not much good if you aren't a NYT subscriber. The description you off those is nothing revolutionary, I believe a number of people feel this way and that it is only a matter of time before the death of the NCAA. The question IMO is whether the NCAA continues to exist kind of like the NAIA now.
