introducing Nex Mexico

The lobo fans are talking about how they will probably be able to penetrate at will on us. I must admit that is a concern for me as well. Several games this season, and particularly against the Cats we had trouble defending against quick guards cutting inside, and whenever Quale was caught up top you could almost guarantee he would be beat on the dribble. That's my biggest defensive concern, if we go zone and get spread out to stop their three point shooting they'll have big lanes to drive on us.
The real strength of the Lobos seems to be their offensive rebounding and 3 point shooters...if the Griz played UW as well as some here say, this game is not out of reach for UM...the Husky front is faster than UNM according to some talking head on ESPN....if that is true, then UM has a surprise for them..

I been watchin ESPN and ESPN 2 all day and havent heard anyone say your guards are quicker then NM. That would be a big mistake.. Especially considering UNM is a transition and Motion ball club.. They are pretty dang fast!!

Anyways heres to a great season for the Grizzlies!!
22 wins is definately a great season.

Good Luck and GOOOOOO LOBOS

Game day is a few days away, but I love their fans. They are very respectful and know their basketball, at least for the most part on both counts.

I hope UNM basketball fans influence GRIZNATION for the better when it comes to basketball.

Kind of the opposite of us, huh?

The difference in the game will be coaching. UNM folks think that Alford is the man. I don't. Ask his previous team at Iowa what they think of him? He is a chump, they say. Screws up under pressure, they say. Look back to his best chance for an Iowa team to move out of the first round the last time he had them in the dance. They didn't.

He has nice hair, but he is beatable.

I love our chances.

McGillis? I wouldn't count on Jack for much to be honest. He has lost all confidence and is playing defense with his hands and arms, not his feet, which is why he is getting into instant foul trouble. Jack will be lucky to log 10 minutes PT. I am not ripping on Jack the person, but he just hasn't gotten it done for weeks now.

I agree on McGillis. The games I've seen him play I have been left wondering who the heck is this guy? He was all the rage on the message boards before transferring to UM, here was a Pac 10 player (albeit on a horrific OSU team) and then I see him and am very disappointed. He's not what he was made out to be that's for sure.

lobo Fan Here.....There is no way Montana stops Hobson or Gary, and that is no slight to Montana. The only way they do not fill up the box score is because Gary is still laboring from a back injury in the conference tournament and Hobson decides not to show up (Highly Doubtful). Like I said this is not a slight, just when a team is staring a 30 win season in the face there are always a couple of players that no one in the nation would be able to completely stop. The best chance that Montana will have will be for Johnson to have a huge game because Gary tends to have trouble stopping quicker gaurds that can hit a step back J and can get to the line. I do think that the Lobos will get up early but Montana will stage a late comeback falling just short. Think of your game against Weber but instead UNM will hit FT's to ice this one. Good Luck though.

Here's the deal:

Nobody expects us to win. It would be a HUGE upset if we did. New Mexico, on the other hand, has a legitimate shot to win two games in the tournament.

Our team doesn't expect to win two games, so the Thursday night game is for all the marbles. You can expect our guys to leave it all on the court, even if we lose by twenty. "David versus Goliath" is what makes the tournament fun for people like us.

The basketball talking heads, who argue endlessly about whether or not some .500 team from the Big East should have gotten an at-large berth, have a completely different (and in my opinion, incredibly boring) perspective.

4 losses

Oral Roberts

Both played UC Riverside and won in very similar ways...this is going to be a good match up....I really like UM's chances here...NM did not look all that great on tv yesterday.....if Staudacher can hit threes and Cherry take the heat off AJ that we now know is going to be great, this game could be a good win for the Griz....

Both also played NAU: Griz won by 17 and 21, UNM gave NAU worse loss of season, winning by 39
Both also played CSU - UM lost by 1, UNM won by 6 and by 18

I don't expect the Griz to beat the Lobos (who I've rooted for for many years, after having lived in Albuquerque back in the dark ages), but I believe it could, in a perfect situation, happen -- and that's what I will be hoping for. Go Griz -- make us proud.

Hello from another Lobo fan. Thursday can't come soon enough, really excited about going up against a new opponent after beating up each other in conference. Found a highlight video of the Lobos just in case you haven't seen us this year.

Yaw-w-w-wn! So you're really, really, really, really, really good. What's your point? Can you send us some hi-lite video of your football team and Al Unser, Jr.'s NASCAR career, too?

With all due respect GB1, that is how Jack has played for longer than weeks. I think Jack is probably a stand out guy, but for some reason just has tried to live up to too much hype since coming to MIssoula. He plays probably harder than anyone on the floor, so I will give him credit there, but just has struggled to be the great player he was in HS. No disrespect here.
Jack has the look of a DE for the football team... I wonder if he has spent TOO much time in the weight room... he's almost muscle-bound, a long strider and not quick footed... I'll bet the kid is terrific off the court, but he's just warming a starting spot right now until Derek can come off the bench. I mentioned before that Banny's one start at the end of the season was very productive... he showed quickness, defense, rebounding and scored the ball when the opportunity presented. Since then... what the hell? Tink's buried him. This is where we distinguish between reality and polyanna fans of the Griz. Reality says he sits... Polyanna says we don't want to hurt his feelings cuz he's a nice kid... I say you PLAY TO WIN THE GAME...

This is what I don't understand re: Banny. Didn't UM beat Weber at Missoula w/o McGillis? Wasn't Banny in most of that game? Coaches, sometimes, get set in their ways & can't see a forest for the trees. I, too, would like to see more minutes from Banny. Another point: AJ will not be his BSC championship self & someone will have to step up. Isn't it about time that Stauds lives up to all his undeserved hype? No way is AJ going to score 42 points this game. Stauds is supposed to be a big-time shooter. Well, step up, young man, show us what you got in possibly your final game with the Griz.
